Information about Charlie
I am a professional tutor and mentor specialising in a breadth of humanity and essay writing subjects up to A Level and beyond in some cases. I provide a tailored 1:1 service with students to develop a personal essay technique and help build their confidence with the English language across a range of humanities subjects such as English and Geography. Where necessary, I will also work with the student to fill in any gaps in their knowledge in these areas.
I offer an additional free 15 minute introduction before the first hour session to assess the students style of learning and required content to be covered. This will help to tailor future sessions to ensure maximum student engagement and increase the efficiency of our time together.
Specialities:
- Improving writing technique
- Help with coursework and essays
- Efficient study skills & time management in the social media age
- Increasing performance and confidence in exams
Further Specialities:
- Public/Private School Entry Examinations & Interview coaching
- University Personal Statements / Academic applications / Internship applications
- Techniques for students with learning difficulties such as Dyslexia or ADD
- Essay proof reading and alterations for higher education
Availability: **UPDATE** Given the recent COVID-19 developments I will also be carrying out tuition online. I have developed a good formula for working with students online over the years. This involves working together in realtime on Google Docs whilst also talking with the student over the phone or FaceTime. By uploading essays, past papers or exam material onto the Google docs I am able to talk through solutions and ideas as well as making comments and suggestions directly within the student`s document on their computer screen as we talk.
Otherwise, I am based in central Farnham but would be happy to travel within a reasonable distance from there provided travel expenses are covered.
Willing to travel: 12 miles
Experience: Having recently come out the other end of the education system, I am very proficient with essay writing, revision techniques, and exam preparation. I am a patient teacher and a firm believer in guided learning, having helped a large number of students to understand, research and critically analyse the topic themselves.
As individuals, we all have our own preferred way of learning but this may not necessarily be the way a student is taught at school. As a result of this discrepancy, we often see students that love science based subjects but hate writing essays. A lack of connection with a subject can quickly lead to a vicious circle of them falling behind, losing their confidence, and resenting the subject further. Whatever the case may be, this discrepancy in teaching styles is easily rectified with tailored 1:1 sessions that help build a more positive learning attitude.
I offer a range of different learning and essay writing techniques to help students gather and assess the correct information, quickly and efficiently make a draft, and produce an essay answer that is succinct and relevant to the question. I also offer a number of revision techniques and good study practices according to the individuals specific needs. These may include revision flash cards, crib sheets, written practice questions, or simply talking through the subject to give the student a chance to formulate their answers out loud, fill in the gaps where necessary, and build their own confidence. Inspiring the student and creating an enthusiasm for the subject is half the battle. The other half is a combination of technique and knowledge retention.
Over the years I have helped students with a number of their English Literature GCSE set texts such as Lord of the Flies, A Christmas Carol, and various Shakespeare plays. Depending on timescales, I can go through these with students in depth or as a quick revision exercise to make sure they are prepared for the exam. I also offer a similar service for English Language papers, helping students to identify what the exam questions require, and making sure they understand the A01, A02 and A03 mark scheme system so they can achieve the grade they deserve.
I am also able to offer help to students with specific learning difficulties such as Dyslexia and ADD. I am not officially qualified in these areas but instead teach from my own personal experiences and advice given to me by trained specialists throughout my higher education.
I have been fortunate to have carried out part of my education in the private school system and am therefore able to offer some informal preparation for the entry interviews required by private/public schools.
If you feel that my services would benefit you then please get in touch to discuss further details.
