Information about Christos

Hi, I`m Christos, an MSc student at the University of Oxford in Mathematical and Theoretical Physics. I am currently looking for tutoring opportunities on Physics Aptitude Test preparation, A-Levels and Physics and Mathematics Degree material.

I did my undergraduate degree in Mathematical Physics at the University of Edinburgh. I have acquired a deep understanding of mathematics and physics throughout my studies, and it is this understanding that I seek to pass to everyone who is struggling with the subject, because my philosophy is that, there is no concept that you cannot grasp, you just need some time and guidance. Before university, I was an active problem solver of physics with numerous national awards and international olympiad experience (IPhO and IOAA).

I really enjoy tutoring and have been tutoring university students in Edinburgh in the subjects of physics, mathematics and programming. My sessions have been mostly 1-1 with a focus on the personal difficulties of a student. I have also personally organised and lead group sessions with as many as 40 students. I also produce my own teaching material for physics olympiads or entrance examinations preparations. My home university has recognised my tutoring activities and skills gained through it with the "Edinburgh Award".

The structure of my tutoring is very flexible and depends on the taste of the student. Some students prefer that I go through the concepts myself and then they ask questions on what they say. Some other prefer to only questions and skip through the pieces they feel most comfortable with. Regardless of the type, I make sure that the student has understood the material during our time together. For each student, I try to create a profile of the personal difficulties and optimal learning methods, I make sure to draw the best examples that will help the student understand the concepts.

I very much encourage students to lead the session by driving me to the material that they feel less comfortable with. Once this is done, I try to give more examples through questions that might seem unfamiliar to the student and work with them until they become comfortable with that.

Availability: Currently I am very flexible with hours and available through email at any point throughout the day: simply drop me an email with your question and I will try to get back as soon as I read the email.

Experience: Tutoring:
- 3 years of experience working on one-to-one sessions with university students in physics, mathematics and programming. Each student came from a different background: EU (Int`l baccalaureate), UK (GCSE`s, A-Levels), Scottish (Highers) and other internationals, so I can understand the previous knowledge of each student.
- I also facilitated teaching in bigger groups through revisions sessions.

Academic:
- BSc Mathematical Physics, First Class Honours (86%)
- Many awards throughout my time in Edinburgh.
- Physics Olympiads and Competitions: 2nd Place in National physics competition, IPhO 2014 participation, 2nd Place at PLANCKS Preliminaries (university physics olympiad in the UK), 2nd Place in National Astronomy competition, Participation
in IOAA 2013, Top 15 in 2013 in National Mathematics competition
- I can help students interested in physics olympiads get started by offering a "beyond high school physics" tutoring that I am very intereted in. Contact me for details.

Research:
- Astronomy Project at the Royal Observatory of Edinburgh
- Condensed Matter Physics project at the Rudolf Peierls Institute of Theoretical Physics (Oxford)
