Information about Helen
I am an academic philosopher with a passion for education. I believe that knowledge can be transformative, and I enjoy helping students to develop their skills and reach their potential. I have worked in education for the last decade, variously working as a private tutor (KS3- A level), and a seminar leader (first-year undergraduates). I have taught English Literature (KS3-GCSE), English Language (KS3-GCSE), Philosophy (A level - undergraduate), Religious Studies (A level), and Psychology (A level). I am passionate about developing inclusive, engaging lessons, and encouraging students to learn through inquiry. Please note that due to the Covid-19 pandemic, I am only able to offer online tutoring.
Willing to travel: Home Only
Experience: I have been tutoring on-and-off since 2010, and have taught a variety of KS3, GCSE, AS and A level students. During my PhD, I also worked as a seminar leader on core undergraduate modules in philosophy, where I taught small groups and marked essays and final exams. As part of my training for this role, I completed mandatory training in teaching in higher education (ITLHE). I have also studied continuing professional development modules in educational design, enhancing learning and teaching, and online education.
I favour a student-centred approach to learning. By this I mean that:
> The emphasis of the tuition sessions should be on you as the student, rather than on me as the educator. We will focus on what you need, what your worries and concerns are, and how you learn best. My role is to help find solutions to issues that you may be having, and help you to achieve your academic goals.
> I will not simply talk at you (lecture-style). Instead, we will have collaborative discussions about course content, and do activities that (i) help to place what youre learning in more everyday, real-world contexts, and (ii) allow you to critically engage with the material.
