TESTIMONIALS

St. Paul’s Scholarship Latin (2016)

Henry stepped in to prove urgent and much needed support for our son in the last two months before he sat the Scholarship exams to St Paul’s School. His Latin was proving to be a weakness and his final mocks at prep school showed he needed some serious effort to bring himself up to scratch. We were delighted to find Henry: he invested serious attention to ensure he knew both what the syllabus for the exam was and also to understand what Archie had studied. Archie thoroughly enjoyed his sessions with Henry - they worked at a fast pace and covered plenty of ground, and he especially enjoyed the personalised pieces of translation which Henry prepared for him on unexpected topics which were chosen to be entertaining and interesting to a 13-year old boy. Archie was also impressed by Henry’s own passion for his subject and the literature.

I can give two measures of Henry’s success with Archie - the most important was that he came home from the Latin exam and was very pleased that it had gone well, which I don’t think it would have done without Henry’s support. The other is that his A- result in the scholarship examination (in the second 20% of pupils) contributed to him winning a very unexpected Academic Scholarship to St Paul’s, the only boy from his school to do so! That has been a huge boost to his self-esteem and confidence as he started at a new school.

Tonbridge Scholarship Latin (2017)

Henry was recommended to us very highly by a friend to prepare our son for Common Entrance Scholarship to Tonbridge. As a result our son got an A in his Latin paper. Our son looked forward to his sessions with Henry. As a result our son got an A in high Latin paper. Our soon looked forward to his sessions with Henry. He loved Henry’s teaching style and manner and came out of every session feeling he had achieved a lot. Henry took great care to ensure my son had grasped all the basic foundations as well as to understand exactly what was require of him in the exam and he provided useful revision sheets where necessary. As result my son went into the exam feeling confident and relaxed. It was a pleasure to have Henry around and I cannot stress how warmly I would recommend him.

Graveney School Mathematics GCSE (2017)

I cannot recommend henry highly enough. He is an excellent teacher, increasing both competence and confidence in his pupils, and he does it in a very relaxed yet effective way. He is reliable, a good communicator, and someone that my daughter felt very comfortable with. The results speak for themselves - she couldn`t have got higher than an a* and is delighted with the outcome. Henry was nice to work with, he gave good value for money, and he helped my daughter achieve exactly the result she needed.

Highgate School 6th Form Latin (2017)

Henry is an outstanding tutor in Latin. He has a huge enthusiasm for the subject and is an invigorating and effective teacher.

He came to tutor our daughter Helen in January, four months into the start of her A-level course. She was finding the move up from GCSE a challenge, and getting around 65% in the tests. Henry has an ability to explain the complexities of the language in a way that makes them feel manageable as well as logical - and almost fun. He cured Helen`s anxiety about translating English to Latin, provided vocabulary and grammar guides, and explained the rules of Latin poetry. Helen benefited from the start, and by the end of Year 12 was regularly getting 85% or better, and 88% in the end of year exam, one of the highest in her year. Best of all she has lost her fear of the subject and is now approaching her A-levels with real confidence

St. Olave’s Grammar School Classical Civilisation A level (2016)

Henry tutored our daughter Helen for the GCSE Classical Civilisation exam, in particular the AQA Iliad test paper. Helen had achieved a “B” in that paper at the end of year 12 (and a “B” overall grade for that subject) and had wanted to re-sit that exam in order to gain an “A” result both in that particular paper and as an overall subject grade. Mr taught Helen very systematically and engagingly, and kept the topic relevant and interesting for her. She always looked forward to her weekly hourly session with him. Helen achieved a remarkable 100% in the that paper when she sate the exam again this summer. Mr had also spent the last tutoring sessions branching out to the other two Classical Civilisation exams Helen was sitting this spring. Her results in the other two exams were 92% and 97%, and she achieved an overall “A*” subject grade. We are certain that Mr ’s tutoring was key to this fantastic result and remain very grateful for his support.
