Information about Kelly
I am a friendly and patient newly qualified teacher (NQT) looking to dedicate some spare time to share the knowledge, skills and experience I have with young and old people alike. I love science and physical geography because it satisfies my curious nature about how everything around us works. I also love helping people and the fulfilment it brings.
I completed my teacher training with Whitley Bay Teaching School Alliance and earned my postgraduate certificate in education (PGCE) with Newcastle University in 2017. My specialism is secondary physics up to A level, with additional experience in teaching biology and chemistry up to GCSE level. I have an enhanced DBS check, which is available on request, and have attended certified safeguarding and child protection training.
My background prior to teaching is marine geophysics, with 8 years industry experience putting theory to practice in challenging offshore environments around the world.
I have a first-class BSc degree with honours in Geophysical Sciences from UEA and a MSc degree with distinction in Volcanology and Geological Hazards from Lancaster University.
Outside of teaching I have a passion for volcanoes as I believe they are a spectacular natural wonder. I also love to travel and enjoy a good hike in order to revel in the natural world around us, as well as experience alternative cultures around the globe.
I look to inspire my students and expand their aspirations to the many opportunities they may have ahead of them by supporting their progress to achievement.
Availability: Due to my current employment I am limited to weekday evenings, after 4pm and weekends.
Willing to travel: 20 miles
Experience: I have been tutoring for a year now with good grades achieved in the latest 1-9 GCSE Science results.
I am currently working as a teaching assistant in a Northumberland middle school where I work one to one with a number of students aged between 11 and 13 with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND). I thoroughly enjoy facilitating their learning and development in the following Key Stage 3 (KS3) subjects; Maths, English, Science, PE, RE and PSHE.
During my teacher training I taught KS3 and GSCE level biology, chemistry and physics as well as AS level physics. During my school placements I gained experience in differentiating my teaching for mixed ability classes, learning how to adapt resources and strategies to meet the needs of individuals, including SEND students as well as gifted and talented learners. I also gained experience in effectively using assessment to build on prior knowledge and promoting good progress through encouragement and reflection.
