Information about Helen

Hi there

A brief summary of me = I am bubbly, reliable and very friendly. I have tutored privately for 17 years and I am also a GCSE Biology and Physics examiner for AQA and Pearson exam boards. I have marked Physics exam papers for 11 years and Biology exam papers for 8 years. I currently work part time in an independent school, but before this I worked for 15 years in state schools.

Availability: My current pupils are just finishing so I have most evenings free at the moment between 6 and 9pm or between 11 and 1pm on Sundays.

Please note that I now tutor online using Skype, Zoom or Google Meet.

Willing to travel: Home Only

Experience: I have been teaching in secondary schools for 17 years and although my Degree (BSc Biology 2:1 Hons) is in Biology, I have also taught GCSE Physics throughout this time, to all ability levels so am able to teach both of these areas.

My normal teaching style is to arrange in advance what topic you want to cover. This is often usually an email or text message a few days before the session. This is so that I can prepare materials which relate to your needs, sometimes we use these materials in the lesson or if I use something in a lesson that a students likes, I email them a copy at the end of the day.

My approach depends upon what the students needs, I have had some students who were extremely good at numeracy and so we bypassed any numeracy questions and practiced on the longer answered questions that they struggled with. I have taught other students who understood a lot in class but struggled with recalling the information, so the focus in those sessions was the long term processing of material and the subsequent recall. I have taught one student the whole of year 11 GCSE science whilst he was recovering from a serious operation. I assisted his parents in finding an exam centre where he could sit his exams and he achieved the grades that he needed for his college placement. He is now training to be a P.E. teacher :-). So I am flexible so if you want something different just let me know and I will do it :-).

Helen has tutored my daughters in GCSE physics and biology and also in A-level biology. She is very professional and organised and couldn’t be more helpful. My daughters have looked forward to their sessions with Helen and have improved immensely in these subjects. More importantly they have gained confidence in these subjects and have loved their lessons. I highly recommend Helen.

Personally, I feel that Helen is a very good tutor. This is because as we go through the lesson we do exam style questions after looking over a certain section of the work. This is beneficial to me as she makes sure I understand everything before the end. Also she tests me on my equations every lesson which helps me memorize the equations. Finally, she is very approachable and I can tell that she cares about my development
