Hi! My name is William, and I am currently pursuing a PhD from Imperial College University in Cancer Imaging. A little bit about my journey:
I grew up in the United States, and during my high school years public speaking and journalism was my specialty. I`d wake up every weekend at 5am to participate in speech and debate competitions for fun. But, I had an affinity for math and science, so I became an engineer. For the first two years of my undergraduate degree I didn`t entirely have a path, so I didn`t try very hard. Eventually, I realized I could use public speaking, writing skills, and my love for the sciences to teach people. I set out on a mission to become a university professor. However, while looking for that path my grades slipped. I used my presentation and writing skills, along with my reputation for having precise research techniques, to recieve a spot and a scholarship in Imperial College`s Masters program. My sole intention was to prove myself here and continue into a PhD position. Being an overseas student, obtaining funding is extremely difficult, but again by combining public speaking and scientific prowess, I was awarded my department`s only scholarship for a PhD position.
The main thing I`ve learned throughout this journey is the importance of communication and a well-rounded education. My interest in politics, graphic design, and public speaking has gotten me further than my skills in scientific research. If you can`t communicate what you know, admissions offices and professors are prone to dismiss you. Neglecting the relationships between topics is an easy way to stunt progress. As a result, I teach wholistically. Drawing subjects together and helping student make connections to topics they might have a stronger understanding in. Once your student understands how these pieces fit together, they`ll be able to tackle any obstacle on thier way to career success.
