Information about Lois

About me: I am a medical student and a very keen baker. Baking is the best form of science! This academic year I am completing a Master`s in management at Exeter University.

As a tutor: I am all about empowering students to gain confidence in subjects they find challenging. I would like to enable students to reach their full potential and succeed beyond targets. During my A-Levels, I had a fantastic tutor who taught me to think in a different way and reimagine the ways I learned challenging content.
My interest is particularly in science and this is something I apply daily in my training as a medical student. However, I also have English language and literature tutoring experience, a subject that I am passionate about.

As someone with dyslexia myself, I am aware of the challenges faced by students. I am hugely empathetic towards how difficult some concepts can be to grasp, particularly when taught in a large classroom of students. From my experience of one-to-one teaching I understand how vital it is to have a good working relationship with your student; understand how they learn best and provide alternative teaching methods that are both fun and mentally stimulating. for example, finding ways that science can be applied to students` individual interests.

Willing to travel: 15 miles

Experience: I have informally tutored for many years, often with a single student in a one-to-one setting.

Last year I joined MyTutor where I tutored GCSE sciences as well as both English literature and language. This experience was challenging, particularly when lessons were online and the student was in a busy classroom environment. As a result, I developed my skills in motivating students to stay focused and persevere to answer difficult questions despite distractions. Over the year I saw improvement in my student`s focus and enjoyment of the lessons which was hugely rewarding.

At university, I have enjoyed leading teaching sessions and I believe that my dyslexia provides me with a unique gift when it comes to teaching as I am able to explain concepts in many different ways, with multiple tricks and learning styles that suit any student. I hope to build a good working relationship with my students to enable us to get the most out of the tuition time.
