Information about Helen

I am a graduate in learning styles with a focus on english, drama/theatre, media and history. I have an active interest in all types of learning and tailor the journey to the individual who is learning.

For english GCSE exam preparation I include all aspects (novels, scri pts, poetry, essays, writing for purpose for the language syllabus and speaking and listening) and specialise in essay technique (helping with advice on structure, organization of material and clarity of expression). Essay technique is also particularly relevant for history exam preparation.

All of the above is also important for 11+ students. I provide tutoring for the english aspect of entrance exams, teaching comprehension skills as well as creative and transactional writing. The process is relevant for entrance to all Grammar schools, with targeted exam practice (for the specific school of choice).

I have extensive experience of working with home schooled students as well as those who go to school, at all levels. These include GCSE, IGCSE, A level, graduate and post graduate level.

I regularly work with students to raise their confidence in their abilities. This is achieved by making learning fun which naturally makes it easier. This is essential for so many young people who are not happy at and therefore not able to cope with attending school. It`s also relevent for 11+ students who are often nervous about the process and the pressure of the exams.

I work in person and world-wide via Skype, Zoom, Teams and Google Meet which are free (to download where relevant) and easy to use.

Where re-takes are concerned many students have improved their grades during their time with me, as the result of improving their understanding about the subject, exam requirements and structure.

I also work as a theatre director, drama teacher and drama coach and can therefore support LAMDA, Trinity College, the Arts Award, exam preparation, Drama School interview/audition preparation and in the development of monologues. I regularly use drama to simply improve confidence.

It is important that all lessons/sessions are geared to the specific needs of the individual. Consequently, I make sessions collaborative and encourage as much contribution from the student as possible. Ideas only stick through engagement and participation - not lecturing - so I make texts and subjects as interesting and relevant as possible. However, I also acknowledge the necessity of a methodical approach, particularly with reference to exams, so I am happy to discuss the process of putting together an essay - length, time management, structure etc.

An initial meeting will always be arranged before tutoring is confirmed, to make sure that the student and tutor will be able to work together. We need to be able to get on!

Weekend classes are availble in urgent circumstances at an additional charge.

I usually work with students fortnightly (so that they can do homework and have time to fit normal life in as well).

Each session is 1.5 or 2 hours long so that we can make sure that everything makes sense and make meaningful progress.

Sessions can take place at my address, out `on location` when I am working with home schooled children/on drama projects, or online.

NB. due to COVID-19 restrictions all sessions take place online at the moment.

Experience: I have been working as a tutor for over 25 years and have had students aged from 5 to 50 years. Teaching has taken place both in person and Skype, Zoom, Teams and Google Meet which are free (to download where relevant) and easy to use (world wide, long distance).

Programmes of work have been developed for those needing general support with school work (for young people in school and at home), entrance exams, GCSE/IGCSE exams and retake work, A level development, degree support and doctorate development (assistance with the writing of your thesis).

Regarding drama, I am a professional actor and theatre director and have worked with a range of colleges as well as theatre companies, working with children and young people. I have also worked with the Birmingham Hippodrome, The Repertory Theatre and within the West End. Many of my students have improved their predicted grades at GCSE and A level, have been accepted into Drama Schools, have returned to me for support whilst at University and Drama School and some have, as the result of attending my drama school or working with me on a one to one basis, have successfully been cast in key roles on stage and television.

We always have fun while learning.

Helen was great and made the lessons fun and engaging, and was easy to have in your house. My daughter absolutely loved her. She passed both English language and literature with flying colours and now writes confidently. Thank you Helen.

Helen has been helping my son prepare to retake his GCSE English. She takes a flexible approach and explored different and alternative ways to encourage him and build his confidence. After a few sessions she suggested that we try an intensive week of tuition. Over the course of a week, with three hours a day, she worked with him to identify specific areas he found difficult and develop strategies that he could use to tackle them. His confidence has significantly improved and he is now working independently applying these strategies to practice past papers. Helen was friendly, easy to work with, full of ideas and focussed on what she thought would work best for my son and we were very pleased with the support we received from her.
