Information about Katie
My name is Katie and I am currently a short haul commercial airline pilot, based at Manchester airport. My educational background is in the Life Sciences, which I studied up to Postgraduate level. Since January of this year I have been undertaking the role of Teach First Academic mentor for secondary science at a school in North Manchester; working with students in Years 10 and 11. Prior to flight school, I worked within the Widening Participation and Outreach department at my University for just over a year, facilitating engagement with a large variety of students of differing ages and backgrounds.
I am committed to raising students aspirations, particularly within STEM, and I am excited to be able to offer my support in the capacity of a tutor. I believe that science should be enjoyable and accessible to all, and this is something that I hope my assistance can provide.
Educational Background
MSc Medical Biosciences, University of Bath (2015)
BSc Natural Sciences, University of Bath (2014)
Aviation experience
A320 Multicrew Pilots Licence; 14 first time ATPL passes (90% average)
Availability: Although my availability varies weekly in line with my flying roster, I am committed to remain flexible where I can to accommodate the needs of tutees. My roster is delivered to me up to three weeks in advance so this would allow me to take bookings with adequate notice for both parties.
Willing to travel: Home Only
Experience: I have been a GCSE Science Academic Mentor at a school in North Manchester since January of this year helping the students overcome the challenges that they have faced as a result of the COVID pandemic. I have thoroughly enjoyed working with the students, motivating them and re-engaging them in science (both combined and triple courses). I mentored small groups of up to 12 students but also undertook 1:1 mentoring when required.
Through my previous outreach experience, I have also worked with a large variety of students in the capacity of both student ambassador and options mentor. I regularly hosted raising aspirations and interactive science workshops, and I also gave presentations on University life and Higher Education options.
I am both a registered STEM Ambassador in the North West and also an ambassador within my company; attending youth groups and schools and giving career talks on the aviation industry and the various opportunities available.

We would recommend Katie to be your tutor. She is thorough, clear and also provides notes after the lesson. My son feels relaxed and can ask her about anything he is unsure about.
