Information about Katy

I am currently working as a private tutor for students in both AQA and OCR A Level Psychology & Sociology. I work with a range of different students with varied skill sets and specific learning needs. My tutoring style helps to build confidence in my pupils subject knowledge and their overall exam technique which has led to me achieving a 95% success rate with students achieving A*-C grades.

I am extremely enthusiastic about Social Sciences and I am regularly reading books and watching documentaries geared around it. I will often spew out random facts about the content I am teaching and I like to engage in discussions to get my students thinking beyond the exam. I take a discussion based approach to learning as I feel that it enables students to build opinions around the content; a skill that is vital when evaluating studies and theories. I like to get students thinking outside the box and beyond the content, this allows them to have a wider understanding of what they are discussing which, most of the time, makes them remember the content a lot more. I also take an active learning approach, getting students to actively participate in tasks rather than dictating to them, I like to make the content more relatable by creating scenarios based around experiences they may have had, this has been found to have a really good effect on students ability to remember content and understand it.

Experience: I have a degree in Psychology from Roehampton University and received my teaching degree in Social sciences from the Institute of Education. I have been teaching for over 8 years and during this time I have worked in a range of schools including a mixed grammar school and an all girls comprehensive school. I have therefore gained a wide range of experience working with a diverse cohort of students from various different backgrounds. I have gained a lot of success when teaching in Schools, my 2017 results were 80% A*-B at A level, 70% A*-C at GCSE and 100% pass rate at IB. Since then I have achieved between 80-90% pass rates in all areas with my biggest success being 100% pass rate in Sociology and Psychology A level in 2019.

I am currently able to tutor GCSE, A Level and IB Psychology and Sociology. I specialise in AQA, but I am also able to tutor the OCR exam board too. If GCSE is what you are seeking, I am trained in both OCR and AQA boards. I am up to date with the new specifications. I have taught all of the options in Paper 3 of the AQA and OCR Psychology paper and so I am confident to tutor these subjects regardless of what students have studied. I also specialise in teaching Research Methods; an area that most students find difficult to get their heads around, most of my students achieve higher than the national average in their Research methods paper.

I have worked as an examiner for the past few years for a range of exam boards, this has allowed me to gain much needed experience to help students pass their exams. I am aware of what the examiners are looking for and also where students often lose marks. Having this additional experience has helped in tutoring sessions because it enables me to share this knowledge with my students to ensure they are improving and fully prepared for their exam. Students tend to like the fact that I have experience examining as it creates a sense of trust between tutor and tutee.
