Information about Jessica
I am an engaging tutor with a successful academic background. In all my activities, I believe in a strong work ethic which includes a great desire to help others to reach their full academic and practical potential. This year I graduated from Oxford University with a First-Class degree in Modern and Medieval Languages (French). During the four-year course, I developed a significant and deep understanding of French literature and philosophy as well as attaining a fluent level of spoken French. I also acquired an advanced understanding of the technicalities of the language and refined my writing skills in a French dissertation which received high marks in the final exams.
This year I will be studying for an MA in Art History at the Courtauld Institute of Art (University of London) as eventually I hope to work in art journalism and the gallery world. I am keen to devote my spare time to tutoring French language and literature, and perfecting essay practice and exam technique in my students. I am a confident tutor of English language and training for Oxbridge entry. Having direct experience of the English exam system (gaining straight A*s in my A-levels), I know I will be a very effective tutor to young students who need support as they move closer to university-level in French.
Bringing a positive attitude to each hour I spend with tutees is remarkably satisfying, and getting to know them, alongside ensuring that they learn and absorb the essentials of the subject, can help uncover hidden possibilities and nurture self-belief. I am always willing to go the extra mile to enable them to fulfil potential and reach the highest marks in their exams.
I am passionate about treating each of my students whatever their age or educational background on their own terms, appreciating their individual approach to learning rather than applying a generic or universal approach to which they must conform. Without this, it becomes much harder to identify tutees difficulties not to mention understanding his/her unique strengths.
Availability: As a Masters student I am very flexible time wise. I am free on weekends and most week nights.
Willing to travel: 4 miles
Experience: Since a young age, I have much enjoyed looking after and teaching children. I began tutoring during my penultimate year of High School when I taught GCSE students from the ages of 15 to 16 in a range of subjects, notably in French language and English literature. In the former, I built on the basic principles of grammar, adjusting the pace according to the individual students progress.
During my second year at university, I tutored French language to two 17-year old girls individually for one hour a week each, mastering complex grammar structures and essay writing in French. Both girls achieved A grades in their final exams, one attaining an A*. Whilst spending my third year living and working in Paris, I tutored English to a 30-year old French woman, spending two hours a week with her for six months and speaking in a mixture of French and English. I taught both written and spoken English, concentrating on essential grammar, sentence construction and oral comprehension through songs, texts and conversation, as well as creative grammar exercises that I prepared carefully and specifically (around the interests of the student) as homework.
I completed a long dissertation in French literature (focusing on Diderot and Zolas work) as part of my degree, and I have extensive experience of proof-reading and organising a long piece of work, and I am therefore qualified to help tutees who may need help with such a project.
