Information about Caroline

To be kind and nurturing is the key to getting the best out of a child. I specialise in working with students, ages 7-12 years, who struggle with learning. I teach Scratch which is a great way for children to learn how to programme their own computer games and to develop lots of transferable skills. My day job involves tutoring and mentoring students who are out-of-school both online and face2face.

Availability: Outside school hours and weekends

Willing to travel: 8 miles

Experience: Degree educated, and 15+ years of experience working alongside children in primary schools as a Learning Mentor/Nurture Practitioner. I may not have a teaching degree but I do have years of experience helping children to learn. I have been trained in Reading Recovery type techniques and Maths Mastery.

I also work for a tutoring organisation where I have successfully taught groups of children to sit entrance exams for schools across Surrey and Kingston-upon-Thames.

Before working with any child, I like to run some sessions where I get to know a child and their motivation to learn. Often, if they have been struggling in class or they feel they are being pushed by parents to learn, they really won`t want to engage with a tutor. My first sessions, would be about getting to know your child from their perspective and encouraging them to want to learn new things. To set targets that mean something to them and to ensure that their learning can be great fun. I endeavour to find links to subjects which they enjoy, so the sessions are fun and engaging. With children who are gifted and able to learn easily, I encourage them to expand their learning and thinking skills to really challenge them. If a task is too easy, they are not learning!
