Information about Justin

I am a highly experienced teacher of English with almost 30 years in the profession, including over 25 years teaching in state and independent secondary schools. I am a current AQA GCSE English Language and Literature specialist and a practising AQA English Examiner.

I was Deputy Head of English at a top UK independent boarding school, with responsibility for coordinating Key Stage 4. I am also a qualified teacher of EAL (English as an Additional Language) and have worked as an Education Consultant and online tutor for an academy in Hong Kong. I have been tutoring students online since 2021.

Many students benefit from the individual, collaborative attention that one-to-one lessons offer, which encourages them to participate actively and take ownership of their own learning. Working one-to-one, students tend to grow in confidence and feel more able to ask questions and raise concerns. I adapt my teaching style and create bespoke resources to meet the needs of each individual student.

Experience: I have over 25 years` teaching experience across the state, independent and international sectors, working with students of widely differing backgrounds and abilities. This includes several years teaching in international schools in France, Poland, Spain and Italy, alongside senior roles in two well-established UK schools. That range has given me a clear sense of how different students learn, and the flexibility to adjust my approach to each one.

For seven years I was Deputy Head of English at a top UK independent school, with full responsibility for GCSE English Language and Literature at Key Stage 4. My role covered planning Schemes of Work, setting and moderating mock examinations, keeping the department current with AQA specification requirements, and mentoring trainee teachers on PGCE placements. Earlier in my career I spent eight years at a large and successful comprehensive school, where I was Whole-School Literacy Co-ordinator and deputy Head of Sixth Form.

I am a practising AQA GCSE English Language examiner, working with the 9–1 specification. This keeps me closely involved in current marking standards and grade boundaries every year, and gives me first-hand insight into exactly what examiners reward — insight I use directly when preparing students for their own exams.

Since leaving my school role, I have also worked as an Education Consultant and online tutor for an academy in Hong Kong, which has broadened my experience of teaching English remotely to students from a range of educational systems and cultural backgrounds.

I hold a PGCE and a BA(Hons) in History and English, and I am also a qualified EAL teacher, with extensive experience teaching English as an Additional Language to students whose first language is not English.

I have been tutoring for five years, initially alongside my school role and, for the past three years, as a full-time private tutor specialising in AQA GCSE English Language and Literature and AQA A Level English Literature (Specification A). I draw on all of the above when working one-to-one with each student I teach.

Justin has been a wonderful tutor for our child as they approached their GCSE exams in English and English Literature. He gave our child forty extremely well prepared tutor sessions. Justin was unfailingly calm and positive in his approach. Our child has gone from being completely overwhelmed and despondent at the start of the year to feeling secure in their understanding of the texts and what is expected in the exams. We simply cannot recommend Justin‘s inspiring lessons highly enough.

We cannot recommend Justin enough! Our sons GCSE English grades increased significantly and he was able to secure a place at his chosen 6th form and undertake his first choice A levels as a result of his strong English grades. Justin was patient, highly knowledgeable on the subject, encouraging and has an excellent teaching manner. We would highly recommend him.

Justin worked with our son for an English Literature GCSE. My son historically was very good at English but his results had suffered. Justin responded quickly on our initial enquiry, he listened to our son`s needs and worked with patience and enthusiasm. He built a good rapport quickly with my son who respected him and responded positively to his lessons. Due to the GCSE system at my son`s school Justin worked on English Literature only, my son received a grade 8 which was a fantastic result. Justin was an integral part of my son`s grade performance and we are very thankful that we found him on Tutorhunt.
