Information about Stephen
I offer maths and physics tuition in Salisbury, Wiltshire, from KS3 to A level. I have a degree in Mathematics, awarded by the University of Nottingham, where I studied between 1980 and 1983. I specialised in applied mathematics and theoretical physics. I have also studied Electronics with the Open University.
In lessons, I aim to focus on underlying concepts, and show pupils how to construct and express a logical argument when they solve problems. I also stress the importance of "rote practice" - the practise of solving small problems frequently, to the point where algebraic manipulations become second nature.
For mathematics, I often use geometrical or pictorial arguments to illustrate a topic initially, both at GCSE and A level; geometrical reasoning can be extremely powerful, and can often be converted into more rigorous form when required. I also emphasise the use of correct mathematical notation (e.g. sigma notation, set notation and its uses, intervals of the real line, etc) and, where appropriate, more advanced ideas when they can be helpful (e.g. the ideas of continuity and limits in calculus).
I generally try to teach from a rather wide perspective, and will go beyond any particular syllabus when it is useful; for example, many students find the history of ideas in mathematics and physics both interesting and helpful, and I will explain historical developments where appropriate. In physics, I try to emphasise the importance of describing phenomena mathematically, and also the common concepts that underlie almost all areas of physics (e.g. vectors, energy, rates of change, and so on)
