Information about Edward
My tutoring motto is "chill, but electric."
It`s really important to me that my students want to be in class, and that we know exactly what we`re working on and working towards.
This is something I`ve learnt over 3 years of tutoring, giving 2500 hours of 1-on-1 tuition by the latest count (January 2025).
And, in my experience, it works. As one recent student said; "Ned is wonderful. If I have to rank all my tutors, Ned is at the top."
There`s four key subjects that I teach:
- English and History GCSE.
- 11+, 7+ and Entrance Support
- Oxbridge Applications (History).
- Early years English, UKiSet and English reading/writing fluency.
I graduated from Somerville College, Oxford, in the top 3% of my year group (finishing in the top-ten students). In this time I scored an extremely rare 81/100 in my `Disciplines of History` Finals paper, a first in my Dissertation on Anglo-Indian Partition literature, and was awarded the `Somerville College Principals Prize` as well as an `Exhibition in History` for finishing first in my college. I also received awards from the Royal Economic&History Society and, in 2017, won the Julia Woods Oxford History Prize (2017).
Before University, I scored 12AStars at GCSE, and an AStar and 2As at A Level (English, History, Maths). I scored near-on 100% in both my English GCSE and A Level exams.
When I`m not tutoring, I`m pursuing a career as a musician and songwriter. Beyond that, I`m deeply passionate about all things History (mainly post-1750) and reading novels (Rushdie, Alice Walker, George Orwell are some favourites).
FULL LENGTH TUTORING REVIEW:
"We are forever grateful that we found Ned to tutor our son through his 11 Plus exams. Ned is the perfect balance of someone who is friendly and obviously super academic but is also a cool guy. For me that last bit is actually important.
Grayson really resonated with this human approach and found Neds lessons fun and enjoyable (even at 7.30am in the morning!). I was happy that Grayson enjoyed his lessons but, moreover, was always blown away by how much they actually managed to cover in that hour - without Grayson ever feeling as if he was being forced or under duress.
Grayson would come out of every lesson two inches taller, more confident in his abilities and proud of his achievements. It was lovely to see. Ned would also keep us informed on Graysons progress throughout with quick check-ins after every lesson.
So now that our official time with Ned has come to an end, my husband and I have told him that we want him to remain in Graysons academic life; whatever the capacity. He is such a positive, dynamic and engaging tutor and we want that enthusiasm for learning to be a red thread throughout Graysons whole academic life. Hes never getting rid of us now!"
GCSE TUTORING REVIEWS:
Not my sons favourite subject by far but the improvement was very noticeable early on
thanks to Neds encouragement and guidance, with a bit of effort (alright more than a bit) this was a subject he could do very well in - and actually did - 2 x 8 at GCSE - thanks Ned
I really noticed the improvement in vocabulary and analysis of the set texts and a whole lot of confidence that he could achieve it. (Mother of English GCSE Student)
My son enjoyed every lesson, the progress he was making was large enough that even teachers started commenting on his improvement. I also really appreciated the flexibilty offered by Ned. His analytical skills have improved vastly, this skill has had great effect in the performance of different academic fields. Jumped from grades 3-4 to grade 7s in both Language and Literature. (Father of English GCSE Student).
"Ned was very good in teaching the subject and made English learning in a very systematic way so my son could understand. Ned was always positive and encouraging and helped motivated my son too. My son had a remarkable improvement in the subject and achieved a good result in IGCSE! He has achieved an A in IGCSE which we are all very pleased." (Mother of English GCSE Student)
Ned provided lessons that were both informative and engaging, offering flexibility to adapt to my learning needs. The structured homework was designed to target my weaknesses, which significantly helped me improve my results. I went from a 6 to an 8. (English GCSE Student)
With Neds help I managed to learn how to write essays at a much higher level. I scored an A in English Lit having been on a B before. (English A Level Student)
My daughter liked her lessons and improved a lot- Ned gave her the confidence she needed to do well. Ned was incredibly responsive and flexible with his timings. Whenever a problem arose, the issue was swiftly dealt with. (Mother of English GCSE Student)
Ned managed to have my child very committed to improvements, he made tremendous progress thanks to Neds work and tips. He did great to cover the whole programme in a very limited time, and I cant really see how Ned could have done any better. (Mother of IGCSE English Student).
Fantastic organisation to arrange an initial taster lesson. Well thought out lessons. I would highly recommend Ned. (Father of English GCSE Student).
My daughter enjoyed the zoom lessons with Ned; she learnt a lot and was well prepared for her exams. Ned was always well organised, the link was sent in advance and Ned was connected on time. (Mother of IGCSE English Student).
OXBRIDGE TUTORING REVIEW
Ned is wonderful. If I have to rank all my tutors, Ned is at the top! I enjoyed a lot from Ned`s classes. I found his classes extremely useful, as proved by my HAT results, which landed in the top 7% of all candidates. (Oxbridge History Applications Student).
Ned`s lessons have been really helpful in just covering every single type of question there is to cover. And the extra research at the end of every lesson is really useful for getting to think about how to answer a source/passage question even if my research doesnt ultimately get used in the interview. On the whole its great to be able to talk through the content with Ned whatever that may be and getting feedback that ranges from technique to extra extension, I`d say Ned has been a great tutor to have! (Henry, Successful Cambridge Applicant).
Aside from learning efficient techniques for effectively addressing the question through observing the nuances within a historical source, Ned made an effort to keep the teaching of history fun and engaging through atyp

Ned has been a great English tutor for my 9 year old son. He really enjoys learning from Ned, and tells me that they have a lot fun during their sessions; he always looks forward to their tutoring sessions. Ever since he has started tutoring with Ned, I have observed that my sons writing skills have improved greatly.
