Essay Writing Support Guidelines Q1: Remember that you need a clear definition for each term used in Q1, plus an example which you can use for each. You also need to be able to clearly identify the difference- using your examples should support this, e.g. 'The Cricket Test', increasing use of citizenship tests etc and Cameron's recent statement on the failure of Multiculturalism to support 'Britishness'. You can tie integration in with the concept of multi- culturalism and explain in its idealistic form, whilst questioning whether or not integration is evident in the UK. Tie this to political issues with reference to the rise of nationalist parties, and historical ideological differences between Conservative and Labour in their policies towards immigration. Q2: This is your 'essay' question and you need a clear argument running through your writing with key examples. You should consider the view that Feminism has often failed to be considered as a true Political Ideology because of its focus on a single issue. You can refer to the range of Feminist views to support and challenge this point, for example, you can cite Marxist Feminists as a group who integrate Feminism into a Political Ideology. You should also make clear reference to the range of Feminist perspectives, and those which have a political agenda, and those whose focus is more radical and personalized. You should also make reference to sexual equality laws which would suggest that in theory, Feminism has achieved its political goal of equality for women in men in society. To attain a high grade you should be able to counter this view with the notion of the 'glass ceiling', using examples to show that women are still poorly represented in the organizations which hold power and wealth. If you can attain data on this you should use it in your essay. You could make reference to the way in which Thatcher was heralded as our only female PM which the Conservatives are now using as evidence of their commitment to gender equality, when in reality the challenges that Thatcher faced from her party when should took leadership (because of her gender) were considerable, and forced her to alter her demeanour, appearance and accent to be more 'acceptable' to the men that she was in charge of. Similarly you can revisit the New Labour government under Blair, where women were given key positions of authority in the cabinet. This can show contrasting views towards women in the world of politics, which support the view that Feminism is still significant. Another key argument which you should refer to is the rise in crimes against women, particularly in the areas of trafficking and pornography. These crimes are not pursued as much as they should be, and the rise of trafficking women is an enormous issue, which many politicians do not give enough attention to. This can be linked to the need for Feminism to be active within the Political sphere, as there appears to be a 'hierarchy' in crime, and crimes against women sit below drugs/ weapons/ international crimes. Remember to use key vocabulary and as many examples as you can find to ensure your AO3 marks.
