Lesson 1: Understanding Particle Physics Symmetry: A Fundamental Principle in Physics The Standard Model of Particles

CONSERVATION LAWS OF PHYSICS An expression of the Principle of Symmetry Every thing that happens in the physical universe can be accounted for, otherwise they will not happen. Egs Conservation of charge Conservation of momentum Conservation of mass/energy Conservation of angular momentum Conservation of baryons

CONSEQUENCE: Scientist are able to discover new laws and to formulate theories by Observation of anomalies Application of mathematical and logical reasoning.

We will do a quick review of the well known classical conservation laws. Then, we will describe two particle physics conservation laws.

What is Particle Physics? Physics base on the standard model that explain the constituent particles that makes up matter. Physicists have reduced the laws that govern the behaviour and interaction of known forms of energy and matter to a small fundamental set. The Standard Model includes 12 elementary particles of spin known as fermions. There are six quarks (up, down, charm, strange, top, bottom), and six leptons (electron, electron neutrino, muon, muon neutrino, tau, tau neutrino).

The Standard Model of Physics: Almost every particle interaction interactions can be described by this quantum field theory. Subatomic particles, includes electrons, protons, and neutrons. Protons and Neutrons are called baryons, made of quarks. Other particles include photons, neutrinos, and muons, as well as a wide range of exotic particles

Has 61 elementary particles that can combine to form composite particles that accounts for hundreds of other species of particles. Takes wave-like/particle behaviour into consideration
