One of the greatest enjoyments of a musician's career is to pass along what you have learned, experienced, and discovered to others. I am privileged to have had the opportunity of working with some of the best violinist in North America and Europe. These have included James Ehnes, David Finckel, Phil Setzer, Kathy Stott, Thomas Brandis, So-Ock Kim, Jonathan Crow, and Thomas Williams. The greatest lesson that these musicians instilled upon me is the importance of knowing how to practise properly. This is a skill that many musicians still have not attained. The phrase 'practice makes perfect' can be accomplished if you practise in the right way. The best way to accomplish this is by isolating problematic areas (technical and musical) and finding the most efficient solutions.

Having a teacher that has a great technical facility and musical ideas is a crucial element. One of the best ways to learn an instrument is by listening to professional musicians. A teacher should demonstrate to their students, so they can visually understand technical aspects and develop their musical ear.

I believe that it takes a special talent to be a great teacher. Many professional musicians are wonderful players, but struggle to be able to help others with their playing. It is important to make the lessons fun and enjoyable while working on the crucial elements of playing (rhythm, intonation, right and left arm technique, musical phrases, musical colors etc.) Students should also set goals for themselves as a motivational tool. These would include examinations, concerts, and repertoire. They should also take part in other musical activities, such as orchestras, chamber music and attending concerts. These will allow them to broaden their musical playing and knowledge.
