If you are an adult and you want to speak Spanish whether for business or just for pleasure, you might think that you just need a native speaker to teach you some words and sentences to be learnt by heart. Well, that`s the perfect way to frustrate yourself when anything goes beyond the limited Spanish that you know.

Assuming you`re an adult English speaker, you already have your language`s structures and ways of communication. If you learn some words in Spanish or any other foreign language, you are going to try to put them together following the English grammar rules. Unfortunately that won`t work.

As a complete beginner, if possible you need a Spanish teacher who can teach you in English, otherwise you are going to hear this strange meaningless noises that you`ll feel like are impossible to set in your brain.

So the basic communication during your lessons can be in your language. That`s the way which allows you to understand what your teacher is trying to explain you.

First of all you will need to study some basic verbs, and with each one you will need a certain amount of vocabulary to use with those verbs. You will be able to understand and produce whole sentences very soon, and that`s very important in terms of avoiding frustration because you`ll feel that you can speak Spanish.

From then on your teacher should try to use Spanish as the "official" language during your lessons, and will use only the vocabulary and structures that you have already learnt.

The next step would be to focus on different communicative real life situations you might need, like "in the supermarket", or "going shopping", or "travelling". Once you know the basics you are prepared to improve your skills for the real world.

Bit by bit English will be set aside and your level will be built up from the basic Spanish you have learnt. With time and a bit of efford from you and your teacher, you will be able to consider yourself as a propper Spanish speaker.
