I cannot stress enough the importance of homework.

Embarking on learning a new language is challenging, but without doing your homework you will be sliding down the pole.

Not only will you be squandering money, this is not the worst, the worst is that you ll gradually carve up a passive role for yourself, for if you don t study, away from the 1-1 tuition time, how are you going to cement the ever vanishing information imparted by your tutor?

There is not a hope in hell that you ll be progressing, which is very disheartening. I know. This realization in turn will feed back into your mindset and you ll end up labeling yourself ,, not good at languages,, and such like. (or even blame your tutor, God forbid)

The truth about learning a new language is that you ll get out of it as much as you put in. Its going to be a labour of love, but before you get the glow of love its mostly sweat and knuckling down. Unpleasant and hard.

Memory for languages in adults is tenuous, but the determination to work with what you ve got can help you achieve a good, honourable level of competence.

Memory needs daily exercise, going over the same thing over and over might sound boring but it is the only way to achieve grace. Grace is when the words do come out when you want to speak, because they are ready, you have created a well defined slot for them, through rehearsal. I repeat - there is no other way.

So for my potential students out there - stop labeling yourself, not good at languages, also do not expect me to ,,pour the knowledge,, into you - like you were a passive vessel, but simply work.

Work out a linguistic routine, which needs to contain an adequate amount of revision, drills, reading and repeating. Find your own way. Try out things.

It might not sound pretty, putting together these ,,ugly,, blocks of learning, through grunts of unloved discipline, but in the end you ll communicate well, achieve something, which can make you proud, across cultures you ll soar.
