As I look back on a historic fortnight at the London 2012 Olympic Games, I count myself very lucky to have had a Leadership role at one of the most historic events this country has ever seen.

In an age when celebrity status has become all too easy through the number of reality style television shows, one forgets the respect that should be shown to athletes who, in contrast, spend years honing their skills to be the worlds best at what they do. I will have many fond memories from these games, I was able to attend both the opening and closing ceremonies and watch Andy Murray win Gold at Wimbledon but I think the most memorable performance for me is that of Usain Bolt, the fastest man in the world! This is the first time I attended an athletics event. The race itself was over in the blink of an eye however the lessons learned in what brought Bolt to that position is what truly fascinates me.

If we look at his performance in the 100m or 200m, the difference between him and the person that came second was probably only hundreds of a second. One might argue although there wasn't much difference in time, what a big difference in result. Often people know who won the 100m race at the Olympics but in contrast how many people remember who came in second place? (even though it was still an amazing result!) What factors could we possibly contribute to the little difference in time but big difference in outcome? Could it be extra preparation or training? Perhaps diet or sleep? Could it be attributed to small differences Bolt did in preparation for his race?

Many people think there are such big differences between first and second place but actually it's often only that little extra bit of discipline that's carried out by one individual and not the other. This is true for life as well as sports. I had both a successful teleconference meeting and an unsuccessful one last week. The difference was I prepared well for the meeting that I was pleased with. The one that didn't go so well was primarily because I didn't do the same level of preparation for it. The theory is the same!

I was a guest speaker to a group of about 20 graduate students visiting the games in London from the University of Maine. The impact they had on me was just as powerful as the information I was providing to them because they did their research, came prepared, asked questions and showed a genuine interest in their field.

There are probably countless examples that we can apply this to. The key is to foster the discipline necessary to always try and give that little bit extra. This is how you are able to stand out from the crowd and differentiate yourself from those that are not willing to give that little extra! This will have a tremendous impact on your life and how successful you become at achieving your goals! I believe this is all about changing the mentality of your daily habits. By striving for that little bit more every day, these small differences add up to a whole lot more! Often they are actually not in the difficult tasks but rather in the more simple ones which we make difficult to do!
