Accountancy is traditionally a numbers based subject and it is true that there are many complex calculations and computations to master. However, in the modern business environment it is equally as important to have excellent report writing skills and be able to discuss a company`s performance.

In a recent financial accounting exam 25% of the marks were for written questions. Students historically suffer with these types of questions and hence leave them hoping the numbers will get them through the exam. This is the wrong approach though as there are often many easy marks that can be picked up on these questions.

Below are 5 fundamental things that must be done in a written accountancy question. There are many more things that can also be done depending on the subject and question:

1. Always write in short paragraphs, 4-5 lines maximum. 2. If you are asked to make a decision discuss both sides before making the decision. 3. If the question has calculations, put these in an appendix and reference your discussion to them. 4. Always leave at least one line in between paragraphs. 5. Prioritise your points with the most relevant at the top.
