First some background on Churchill (1874 - 1965) a British statesman, military officer and writer of mixed English/American heritage born into the wealthy aristocratic Spencer family at Blenheim, I remember spending a day as a volunteer musician with The Romford British Legion Boys Band in the late 1960`s involved in a show at the Palace. In 1888 at age 13 he passed entrance exam for Harrow public school, the last 3 years were in the army form and he made Sandhurst (1893). After active war service he left the army in 1898 (only to return during WW1), spent sometime South Africa as a conservative MP in 1900 following a career as a journalist during the Boar war. In 1904 he crossed the floor to become a Liberal party member. Becoming home secretary in 1900 supporting many reforms, including prison reform supporting women supporting women suffrage, work condition reforms.
