Suddenly I see! This part of the lesson is on the eye and visual system.
The eye is a sensory organ that contains the receptors that are sensitive to light. The picks up on 2 characteristics of light - its wavelength (colour) and its intensity. These receptors are known as photoreceptors and they are found in the retina. There are many different components making up the eye, which function to bend and focus the light rays onto the retina, which sends this information to the brain to produce an image.
Parts of the eye:
  • The cornea and lens work together to refract (bend) the light rays to focus it onto the retina
  • The iris will control how much of the light enters the eye, by controlling the diameter of the pupillary aperture (pupil)
  • The optic nerve carries the impulses from the eye to the brain
  • The retina contains the photoreceptors
  • The sclera is the tough, outer white layer which protects the eye from injury
