A time trap is a saying I introduce to my students to help them identify a question that could have a negative impact on their ability to perform in the exam. Perhaps the examiner has chosen awkward numbers that would require the student to spend too long on a question for little or no reward. On the other hand the question maybe interpreted by the student incorrectly and then then an inefficient method is applied to the question. That in turn cause the student to fall into the time trap. The effects of falling into the time trap also include& wasted energy, stress and reduced confidence for the remainder of the exam.

Some possible solutions for the student would be to read the question again to think about a more efficient method. Mark the question as tt and move on. Complete the rest of the paper then time permitting return to the time trap.
