Hello

I m Soulla.

In this short article I m looking at English in the UK National Curriculum.

As a teacher and educator I support the National Curriculum s aim in promoting high standards of language and literacy by equipping all pupils with a strong command and understanding of the spoken (oral) and written language, and to develop a passion for all types of literature through a broad choice of reading materials for their enjoyment.

Poetry, fiction and non-fiction texts, magazine articles, newspaper reports (both physical and online) and discussions are all included in reading materials. I encourage all pupils and their parents to use a variety of materials to support their child s reading.

By the end of the KS2 curriuculum, pupils should have met each national target for literacy in writing, reading, Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar and spoken language.

This should ensure that every pupil in the classroom is able to:

Independently write clearly, and accurately with the ability to adapt their language and style in and for a range of contexts, purposes and audiences.

Use discussion in order to learn they should be able to elaborate and explain in detail their ideas to a teacher or their fellow students.
Show that they are competent in speaking and listening, making formal presentations, taking part in informal discussions and demonstrating to others and participating in debate.

Read easily, fluently (intonation, pace, pause) and with good understanding and develop the habit of reading widely and often, for both pleasure and information.
Use a wide range of vocabulary, an understanding of grammar and knowledge of linguistic principles for reading, writing and spoken language.
