Consider a situation where one has a box with
identical sides whose length of the side has to be determined given the space, the
volume, it occupies. This is a common case in designing cubical water tanks. First,
the desired capacity of water to be supplied is identified. Then, based on the
identified capacity, the length of the cubical tank that would carry such
capacity is computed. The process of determining the length of the side of the
cube is the process of determining the cube rootFor instance, since 2 2 2=23=8, then the cube
root of 8=23 is 2 and is denoted
8= (23 )=2.From the example above, we found that the cube root of 8 has a close relation with 23, its prime factorization. This implies that for one to determine the cube root, one has to determine the prime factorization of the number. To compute the cube root from the prime factorization, we divide the powers of the factors by three.
