5 free ways you can practice French conversation with a real person!

Quick tips series

Hello, amazing French learners!

In this quick tips series, I am going to discuss ways that you can practice French conversation in the real world, with a real person. Now, we all know that the ideal way to practice conversation would be to travel abroad, but not everyone can afford or has the time to travel to practice conversation. There are a lot of tips on the Internet that give tips on how to practice speaking alone or for a fee, but when it comes down to conversation skills, you really want to be interacting with someone. Here are five ways you can practice your French, you don t need to install any particular app, and they are completely free!

Quick tip 1: Meeting with a native face to face

Ok, so my first tip is to find someone you can have a chat with face to face. Find a conversation partner on ads such as gumtree, go for a coffee, and discuss in French! You may also find a conversation exchange partner: you practice two languages in one session. Your partner will give you feedback on your French and then you swap and practice English and you give your partner feedback on their English.

Another face-to-face option that is usually free (or donation-based) is Meetups and language caf s. Have a look online to see if those groups are running in your area. At the moment with the covid-related restrictions, some of those groups have moved online but they seem to be resuming more and more face to face. You will have opportunities to practice with other learners and get feedback from the teacher running the group. Another great way to get feedback in a more relaxed, informal way!

Quick tip 2: Practising online

My second free tip involves joining groups online to practice French conversation. Now, I m not talking about those fancy apps where you speak to the app. No. I m talking real people, real interaction. But online. As I said in tip number 1, a lot of language caf s have moved online so you will get the same experience as face to face, you will get the chance to meet and practice with other learners while getting feedback from a teacher or a more experienced speaker.

If the idea is a little too intimidating, you can also find a conversation partner online. Have a look at the site Conversation exchange where you can type in some information about yourself and find someone you can connect with. Different options are allowing you to choose your favourite means of communication so if you are not quite ready for face-to-face interaction or a live call, you can simply decide to chat in writing first, get to know the person a little better before engaging in conversation. This site is updated regularly and you can connect with several people! Another great way if you want to get used to different accents and voices!

Quick tip 3: Support groups like Discord and Whatsapp

Whatsapp and Discord were not originally designed for language learning, but they can be really helpful tools to practice conversations. Discord was designed as a gaming platform but gained in popularity over the past few years and is now used for a lot of different things, including learning French. And most of you already use Whatsapp so no need to introduce the app anymore.

If you look up Discord French practice groups or Whatsapp French practice groups online, you will find groups that are run specifically to support learners and allow them to practice communication skills. The great thing about those apps is that everyone in the group is looking to learn so there is no pressure and you can be free to ask questions, experiment with the language, and get feedback from the moderators. For those of you who also want to practice writing, use those too. You will find be able to practice over text chat, voice chat, and live calls as classrooms.

Quick tip 4: Can t find a native speaker? Find a learner

If you are struggling to find native speakers, you can also connect with other learners and practice together. There are also plenty of advantages of learning with other learners. Do you know someone in your circle who is also learning French? Go ahead and practise together! Maybe you don t know anyone locally, in which case you can find other learners on the internet. I would suggest you look into Facebook groups or Reddit forums. I like that you can join a group of learners, connect and converse only amongst learners. For the shy learners out there, this is probably the most reassuring option. If you feel like speaking with a native is still a little too daunting for you, if practicing with a teacher in language caf s or using servers is a little too overwhelming, meeting with other learners gives you the comfort of practising conversation without the added pressure. Everyone in the group is learning and you will find that those groups are also super supportive and non-judgmental, because everyone is going through the same thing!

Quick tip 5: Look for French-speaking opportunities around you

Last but not least. French is a very popular language, and I am pretty sure that you can find places around your town that will allow you to practise French. Head down and see what happens! For instance, you can look for French-related events or even places like caf s, restaurants, libraries, bookstores There also tends to be events where people will be speaking French such as Francophone meet-and-greets and conventions etc. Try your local university, school, language centre! And for those of you who live in a very remote place, well, go back to the previous tips mentioned above, and you ll do great!
