Parts of Speech
These are the different categories of words that are used in a sentence. All of our sentences are made up of parts of speech. These include: pronouns, nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, conjunctions or connectives, and prepositions.
A pronoun is a word that refers to someone, for example "I", "you", "he", "she".
A noun is any object, such as "dog" or "ball", but it can also be names of people or places, such as "London" or "John". Nouns can also be feelings, such as "sadness" or "anger".
A verb is a doing word, for example "run", "jump", "hide", "write".
An adjective is a word that describes a noun, for example "blue", "small", "big", "smelly".
An adverb is a word that describes a verb. They usually end in "ly", but not always. For example, "angrily", "noisily", "fast".
A conjunction or connective joins two words, parts, clauses, of a sentence. For example, "and", "so", "because".
A preposition tells us where an object is. Usually, the object is mentioned alongside another object. For example, "the book is on the table". Examples of prepositions are "on", "under", "above".
