Abstract

Background: Critically ill patients when admitted within the ICU are more susceptible to develop superimposed infections as a result of the suppression of immunological system along with the breach of natural barriers due to the introduction of invasive devices such as endotracheal tubes. VAP is considered as one of the most common and leading nosocomial infections, which may increase the burden of device-related complications in advanced care units.

Objective: This review evaluates the impact of multi-faceted VAP care bundle strategies to limit and prevent the acquisition of VAP in adult critical care settings.

Method: A systematic review was conducted to identify the significant findings from the previous clinical trials to assess the effectiveness of multi-dimensional VAP care bundle measures among the intubated and ventilated patients. A thorough literature review was performed to highlight the advantages and limitations regarding the implementation of VAP prevention strategies along with modern medical practices in intensive care units.

Findings: Only 16 studies showed relevancy with the problem statement and were included in the current review. Fifteen out of the selected studies demonstrated that the clinical outcomes were improved significantly after the implication of VAP care bundles along with the currently available medical resources in the adult ICU population.

Conclusion: The introduction of multi-disciplinary VAP care bundle prevention measures has lowered complications rates related to VAP. VAP is considered as one of the indicators for quality of medical care in the ICU. The adoption of VAP care bundles, along with the latest infection control practices, will ensure the highest quality of care. At present, the well-structured and adequately powered size RCTs are not available within the literature.
