What we will cover today:

Mean, median, mode and range

Statistics and probability

What is the difference between statistics and probability?

Statistics are things that have happened in the past that can be put in a mathematical form. E.g. 50% of children love chocolate.

Probability is when you calculate the chance of something happening.

What is the mean?

The mean is when you add all the values, then divide that number by the number of values.

What is the median?

The median is when you put the numbers in order of size and find the middle value.

What is the mode?

The mode is the most common number in a list of numbers.

What is the range?

The range is the difference between the biggest and the smallest number.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of using the mean, median, range and mode?

Advantage

Disadvantage

Mean

Uses all the data.

Affected by extreme values.

It can take long if there are a lot of numbers.

It may not be a whole number if you are working with discontinuous data.

Median

Not affected by extreme values.

Value may not actually exist.

Mode

Suitable for data that can be described in words.

Not always near the middle of the data.

There may be more than one mode.
