The Presentation Of Nature In Hopkins` Poetry

In Binsey Poplars , the trees are presented as merciful beings. The short line, `not spared, not one` emphasises the innocence and helplessness of the trees and the brutality man inflicts upon them.

Notice the repetition of `not` as you read it aloud. Reading poetry aloud helps you see the rhythmic patterns. The double negative repetition of `not` makes you feel pitiful for the trees, as Hopkins does.

Why do you think Hopkins places such emphasis on trees and their being `felled`? Do they deserve mercy?
