What Are Cells?
Introduction into biology
Date : 02/08/2020
Cells are the basic building blocks of life and each living organism is made up of millions of these cells.
There are two kinds of cells: eukaryotic and prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells are the cells that are more sophisticated in structure, as they contain membrane-bound organelles like nuclei and mitochondria.
Arguably, one of the main organelles in the eukaryotic cell is the nucleus, which contains the cellular DNA that makes the organism unique. The DNA is made of nucleotide bases and is arranged in a double helical shape. The DNA strands are wrapped around histone proteins and form structures called chromosomes.
In each diploid cell (normal somatic cell), there are 23 pairs of chromosomes that all culminate to code for an unique individual.
Thus, the very fabric of our existence depends on the sequence of bases within chromosomes, which are inside nuclei, which are found in cells of which there are millions in our body.
