The subjunctive can seem like a very daunting task! But hopefully using this acronym will make it easier for you.
W - Wishes This is used with phrases expressing hope or dreams. The words commonly have que after them + subjunctive. An example of these phrases are: Espero que + subjuntivo - I hope that Deseo que + subjuntivo - I wish that Quiero que + subjuntivo - I wish/want (please note that this is only used when talking about the influence of someone else on you) for example, Quiero que mi hijo se despierte
E - Emotion It s used to express emotion about something. Again, followed by Que . Normally translated as I m happy that, I m sorry that. Siento que + subjuntivo - I m sorry thatMe encanta que + subjuntivo - I m happy thatMe sorprende que + subjuntivo - I m surprised that
I - Impersonals. This is one of the easiest forms of subjunctive to get into essays! It is used as follows...Es + adjective + que + subjuntivo For example Es importante que discutamos los derechos de las mujeres . Please note that you cannot use adjectives like certain, true etc because this doesn t express doubt! When these are used the indicative is used.
R - Recommendations Examples include:Aconsejo que + subjuntivo - I advice that Permito que + subjuntivo - I permit that Recomendo que + subjuntivo - I recommend that
D - Doubt No creo que + subjuntivo - I don t believe that No es cierto que + subjuntivo - It s not certain thatNo estoy seguro de que + subjuntivo - I m not sure that
O - Ojal It means I wish . Examiners love it! Using que is optional here. An example is Ojal que ya no necesite &la operaci n tu mam .
