Task 1: Writing ratios

1) Write the ratio of blue squares to red squares.

2) Write the ratio of green squares to orange squares.

3) Sandy has 10 sweets. Emily has 9 sweets. Write the ratio of sweets Sandy has to the number of sweets Emily has.

4) Anna has 14 teddy bears. Simon has 16 teddy bears. Hayley has 1 teddy bear. Write the ratio of Anna s teddy bears to Simon s teddy bears to Hayley s teddy bears.

5) Erik has £30 whilst his brother Ted has £601. Write the ratio of money Erik has to the amount of money Ted has.

Task 2: Simplifying ratios

Simplify the following ratios:

Task 3: Sharing in a given ratio

1) Ken and Barbara share £20 in the ratio 2:3. Work out how much money each person gets.

2) Amy, Beth and Colin share 36 books in the ratio 2:3:4. Work out the number of sweets each of them receives.

3) Francie, Paulo and Nicolas receive £45 from their grandmother. They split this money in the ratio 3:2:10. Nicolas feels bad and gives Paulo £10. How much money does Nicolas have now?

4) Bill and Benny work in a garden centre when the owner decides to give them 20 flowerpots in the ratio 4:1. How many more flowerpots does Bill get than Benny?

5) Natalie and Tony share £130 in the ratio 15:11. How much money do they each receive?

6) Rose and Rachael, the bakers, decide to take a break from their relationship. They get their flour for their bread from a rare baker and both need the same flour for their job the following day. Rose and Rachael decide to split the 10kg of flour in the ratio of 5:3. How many grams of flour does Rose end up receiving?

7) Paige, Demi and Shauna share 32 pairs of earrings in the ratio 3:4:1. How many more pairs of earrings does Demi receive than Shauna?

8) Angela and Paul go on a gameshow and win £1500. Paul believes he is smarter than Angela and he got more answers correct so he wants to split the money in the ratio 3:5. However, Angela believes she should get the larger portion because she was the one who suggested going on the game show and she needs the money more as her house recently flooded. She wants to split the money in the ratio 7:5. How much more money would Angela get splitting it her way, rather than Paul s way?

Task 4: Knowing one total

1) Kaleb and Lacie go for a walk when Sonny stubbles across some money on the ground. Lacie wants to share the money with Kaleb but wants more because she was the one to find the money. So, she decides to split the money in the ratio 13:7. Lacie gets £104. How much money does Sonny receive?

2) Gregg and Jane love sausage rolls and decide to share some in the ratio 5:7. Jane gets 21 sausage rolls. How many sausage rolls does Gregg get?

3) Harriet and Marcie share some chocolate buttons in the ratio 12:7. Marcie gets 56 chocolate buttons. How many does Harriet receive?

4) Tony and Oscar win a cash prize which they split in the ratio 8:11. Oscar receives £121. How money does Tony win?

5) Mick and Donna decide to raise money to charity. For every mile they run, Donna s mum said she will donate £5 to the charity. Mick is a faster runner than Donna. For every 5 miles Mick ran, Donna was only able to run 3 miles. Donna ran 18 miles overall. How much money did Donna s mum give to charity?

Task 5: Knowing the difference between the amounts

1) Tony and Carole buy some tigers and share them in the ratio 4:5. Carole receives 5 more tigers than Tony. How many tigers in total did they buy?

2) A strawberry lace sweet is divided into the ratio 7:2. The longest side is 25cm longer than the shorter side. How long is each side?

3) Alex and Ben were given some money. They shared the amount in the ratio 5:7. Ben received £40 more than Alex. How much money did Alex get?

4) In a school, there are 6 classes in which there are the same number of students in every class. There are 10 more girls than boys in each class. The ratio of girls to boys in a school is 3:2. How many students are there in the class?

5) Harry and Bo share some sweets in the ratio 3:7. Bo gets 20 more sweets than Harry. How many sweets does Bo have?

Task 6: Working with 2 separate ratios

1) The ratio of bears to crocodiles is 5:3. The ratio of bears to lizards is 1:8. Write the ratio bears: crocodiles: lizards.

2) The ratio of t-shirts I own to jumpers is 5:6. The ratio of jumpers to hoodies is 3:4. What is the ratio of t-shirts to hoodies?

3) The ratio of clownfish to salmon is 7:6. The ratio of starfish to salmon is 5:3. If there are 50 starfish, how many fish is there altogether?

4) The ratio of cats to dogs is 4:3. The ratio of dogs to fish is 9:4. If there are 6 cats, how many fish are there?

5) The ratio of pens to glue sticks is 10:4. The ratio of pencils to pens is 30:15. If there are 12 more pens than glue sticks, how many pencils are there?

6) The ratio of baseballs to basketballs is 9:4. The ratio of netballs to baseballs is 6:5. If there are 20 more netballs than basketballs, how many baseballs are there?

7) The ratio of Americans to Brits is 7:4 and the ratio of Brits to Germans is 3:2. If there are 18 Germans, how many more Americans are there than Brits?

8) The ratio of blankets to duvets is 5:1. The ratio of cushions to blankets is 4:6. If there are 7 more cushions than duvets, how many blankets are there?
