What 2 Things Should Students Do When Writing an Essay in an English Exam?

When a student is sitting an English exam, an essay question is instructing you what to write about. An essay question may ask about themes or characters in the literature studied, or they may ask you to discuss the structure or significance of the book in modern society. When writing an essay, especially in an English exam, students should write a well structured essay that is clear and easy to understand that answers the question with well supported arguments.

When writing an essay, clarity is paramount to understanding. The basis to clarity in essays, I believe is to have good essay structure. Having good essay structure means laying out your answer in a logical manner and which shows the progression of your argument. Correct grammar and sentence structure also aids clarity because it means the language is understandable immediately. Long, over run sentences do not lead the reader to understand your argument, as they include too much information some of which may be unnecessary. Thus clarity in an essay, primarily including a clearly structured essay with correct grammar, will help the reader understand what is being argued.

When an examiner is marking an essay she should be able to understand what you are arguing and your view on the subject. The student must clearly state in his or her thesis statement what they will argue. The thesis statement is usually the last sentence of the introduction. However even if the thesis statement is clear, it must be backed up by well supported arguments in the body paragraphs. In order to back up their arguments, students must use evidence such as quotes from the literature. If asked to write about a character for example, quoting dialogue which exemplifies character traits will provide proof for the argument made. This way, the reader will understand why such an argument will have been made. Therefore, when writing an English essay, students must give a clear statement of their argument and then support with evidence in order to be clearly understood.

In conclusion, when writing an English essay one of the most important aspects is clarity. If the essay is not answered clearly it cannot be marked well, let alone be understood. Clearly written essays will need a number of things such as correct grammar and essay structure, clearly stated thesis statement and well supported arguments. Although these are not the only parts to how an English essay should be answered, they are 2 of the most important because they focus the attention on being able to understand what has been written.
