Law is not just a fascinating subject, but it enables you to broaden your mind in terms of the political landscape that we see today, by applying legal skill and knowledge and interpreting the effects of regulation and the proposition of new law. As legal academics, this can enable us to predict the direction of, for example a political party or political agenda.

Why is this relevant? Well, since the application of skills acquired and learnt within the discipline of law is applicable outside of the sphere of the legal world, this gives students a wide range of options when obtaining a degree. Some of these sectors include the finance sector, public sector including the military and the police. It is important to recognise this, as students can fulfil their potential in an area that they feel fit.

Those who are interested in the conventional route have a clear path for example the route for a solicitor is obtaining a law degree, usually whilst obtaining that degree, undertake a vacation scheme in a law firm, subsequently pursuing a training contract, completing the Legal Practice Course to enable them to become qualifying solicitors. The other conventional route, is to become a barrister where it is necessary to complete the bar professional training course upon completion of a degree.

It is important that whilst studying for your degree, to have an understanding of what routes are available and how to pursue those routes.

Whilst tutoring, it is one of my aims to ensure students have a wide range of knowledge in regards to progression and what they need to do in order to succeed in that area, whether that is applying for vacation schemes in their first and second year of university and then applying for training contracts, to other graduate schemes that are available to law undergraduates. It is sometimes the case that students are undecided and in that case I ensure that I convey a broader range of options and to advise on work experience.

This is helpful for those studying at A level who want to pursue a degree in that area. An understanding of the areas where that degree could take them at an early stage will give that student an advantage.
