Revision for essay subjects is tough! Cards, coloured highlighters and chapter summaries can often promote that feeling of progress. But sadly, it isn t always that simple. Great knowledge doesn't always lead to good grades and if your content isn t getting you the marks you deserve, it s worth having a look at your process. Here, I outline 5 of my top tips for essay writing success.
1. Answer the question - It sounds obvious but plenty of people get caught out on this one. Underline the key words in the question and focus your mind on the task at hand. Give the examiner exactly what they want, nothing more, and you ll be sure to attain those top band grades. 2. Always write a plan - It doesn t matter how short, just get something down before you start writing. Summarise each of your paragraphs with a simple bullet point or two and top it off with a quick line detailing your conclusion. (P.S. It also doubles up as a cheeky sign-post to the examiners that you know where you are going!) 3. Use the mark scheme - This is an absolute must for anyone doing their GCSE s or A-level s. Believe it or not, examiners want you to do well! But if you stray too far from the marks scheme, you ll make it difficult for examiners to award you the highest marks.4. Shorten your sentences (and use commas!) - Marks are more likely to be lost than won. Keeping your answers concise, detailed and punchy will force the examiner to award you marks. Once you ve made your point and backed it fully with a solid explanation and appropriate context, move on (no matter how much you love contemplating Paulina s witch-like qualities in The Winter s Tale. )5. Past papers, past papers, past papers - As much as it really pains me to say it, practice, practice and practice some more. Yes it s boring and yes, it s far more exciting to colour code your revision cards, but it s writing and re-writing your answers that will really make a difference to your essays. Only then can you be sure that you ll succeed in a high-pressure environment like the exam room.
And that's it! 5 Top Tips to transform your essays and improve your grades. These are sure to put you on your path towards success in your written work. Good luck and keep going.
