Acting as a career requires dedication, perseverance and self promotion as well as skill. It is a craft just as much as wood carving or jewellery making. The only way to improve is to practice; to learn from others and from your own mistakes.

But it is also a useful tool for anyone - even those who don`t wish to perform. Self awareness, controlling nerves and learning to be a clear and commanding speaker are necessary for many jobs in the modern world. We may have to present a version of ourselves which is suitable for a particular job or situation; we may have to be aware of our body language and what that might give away about ourselves or what it might tell a prospective employer or client. Many of the exercises used by actors to help them portray a character on stage or to lose part of themselves in order to become someone else can be utilised by anyone to help them discover how they appear to others and how they can increase their confidence and presence in everyday life.
