What Makes A Student Excel?

Students are currently facing numerous challenges as the education system continues to use archaic teaching practises with an average of one teacher to every 15 students. It is no surprise that many students struggle to reach their full potential and excel in class. As a tutor, it frustrates me to the core to see many great students get let at the wayside within large sized classes. Private tutors offer great support to many students; however, it is becoming increasingly evident that many parents are feeling worried about the future of their children because the odds are clearly against them. Tuition fees have increased and the opportunities to land a lucrative job after university is becoming even tougher than ever. On average, less than 100 students get accepted into private schools despite hundreds of candidates fighting for a place. To put it frankly, competition is fierce and the odds are definitely against them. Naturally, many parents want to place their children at an advantage with extra tuition after school. But what makes a student excel on their own accord?

I have three tips that I would like to share with you:

1. Environment:

A student can thrive if he/she is in the right environment. Have you ever noticed certain spaces increase your productivity in comparison to others? In order to excel, I strongly recommend parents to provide a comfortable space that their child can study without external distractions. On the contrary, some students thrive in group work whilst others prefer to work independently. Getting the balance right will make a positive impact on your child's personal development.

2. Discipline:

I would advise parents to reinforce one of the most sought after traits: discipline. No amount of motivation or willpower can produce results. I believe that if you teach your child the art of discipline at a young age, they will become unstoppable. Create a study routine that is completely non-negotiable and stick to it. This creates positive habits that optimise productivity.

3. Enthusiasm For Learning:

Each child has a set of preferences when studying. I can immediately recognise if a student has great enthusiasm for a subject. This is almost half of the battle. When a student enjoys learning, they will become naturally inquisitive and as a result, they will thrive! In essence, this is crucial to a child's development. In order to generate enthusiasm, Parents MUST be supportive and infuse positivity into their child's overall experience and engagement with studying.
