How many people have begun to study a language, found it "too difficult" and given up? Perhaps you decided you were "not clever enough or "no good at languages" and left it at that.

Once you realize that all words are just symbols for objects or actions, and that objects and actions are stored in the mind in picture form, you have a basis upon which to build learning any language.

For example, if I show you a picture of the moon, you instantly recognize it. If you are Spanish, you will identify the object with the words "la luna", or if you`re German, "der Mond".

Conversely, if I say "la luna" to a Spanish person, he or she will instantly envision a picture of the moon.

This idea is of course not new, and the above is a simple example, yet one can see from it that once one has a clear concept of an object or action, learning the word for it is only a matter of repetition and familiarity. If you identify the words "la luna" with the brightly-glowing globe in the night sky a few times, you`ll soon know it by heart and you`ve actually started down the road to learning Spanish.

For sure, becoming fluent in a language may take a bit more time, yet the simple principle given above still applies. In learning any language, it is important to realize that words are merely symbols for objects or actions, and that you already have countless pictures of objects or actions stored in your mind. Becoming fluent is simply a matter of learning by repetition to associate words with objects or actions.

I have started employ this simple principle in teaching English to speakers of other languages, and in so doing my students have found learning not only much easier, but also much more fun!
