Information about Ian

Are you seeking support for National 4/5, IGCSE, GCSE, Higher, Advanced Higher, AS or A Level in maths, physics or chemistry?

I am a highly experienced teacher and tutor operating out of my base in central Edinburgh.

My interests are many and varied but I do particularly enjoy teaching maths and science. I strongly believe that one-to-one tuition can not only bring exam success in these subjects but also, helped by my great enthusiasm for teaching and education generally, instil in students a lifelong drive to learn. I am passionate about the psychology of learning and how we can help each other to learn and understand – particularly, of course, learning and understanding mathematics, physics and chemistry. I don’t believe that there’s a maths or science concept beyond anyone’s understanding: I believe it`s a question of knowledge, experience and confidence. My passion is helping people gain all three.

Not only do I provide individualised, tailored support through face-to-face or online sessions but my tutees also have 24/7 access to a free online forum and to an online learning platform for extra support outside of lesson time.

Please ask to see my Enhanced DBS for extra peace of mind.

Availability: I am available evenings and weekdays and weekends.

Willing to travel: 8 miles

Experience: My work has always focused primarily on communication and learning. Fifteen years spent in private industry designing communication systems software eventually saw me concentrate on the development of accessibility and learning aids for blind, partially sighted, dyslexic, and dyscalculic computer users – whilst also working part-time as a maths and science tutor. On leaving industry I became a tutor and lecturer. My particular specialism is online learning (particularly teaching maths online) and am a well known figure in this arena (please check out my Online Experience).

I am a professional physicist and full member of the British Computer Society. I hold a Level 3 Award in Education and Training.

When Ian met my Granddaughter for the first time she immediately felt comfortable with him which is most important and she told me she had already learned lots on his first visit. I am delighted and would have no hesitation in recommending him.
