Information about Tim

I plan and deliver regular Maths and English (ESOL/EFL) courses in group classes. I also provide 1-1 teaching and mentoring, face-to-face and on-line. I have been teaching English and Maths for nearly 20 years, to individuals and to groups of all ages and backgrounds. I am a native English speaker, and I speak Italian.

When I plan courses, I combine the demands of the curriculum with individual student needs. I am friendly, patient and flexible, and good at developing students` confidence. I want them to develop an understanding of the subject as well as prepare for exams.

I teach people across a range of different backgrounds, nationalities and age groups, including young learners. I bring a lot of variety to the classroom, as well as traditional types of exercise, to encourage students` interest and independent learning. In both Maths and English classes, I like to see students working together in small groups, collaboratively and communicatively.

I offer 1-1 lessons both face-to-face, here at home in central Brighton near the Clock Tower, and online: whichever is more convenient for the student. For GCSE and A-level Maths students, this can be short-term exam preparation or longer-term support. I also offer ESOL/EFL classes. These can be 1-1 or with small groups, often to improve fluency in spoken English, but I can help with any aspect of English language.

Normally I suggest weekly lessons of 1½ hours or 1¼ hours, rather than just an hour. The reason I say this is that an hour can feel a bit limited, by the time I`ve responded to students` questions about their recent homework and covered the topics for that lesson. However, some students can find that 1½ hours is a long time to concentrate, in which case an hour is OK. It depends on the individual student. Some students like to have more than one lesson each week.

I generally get on well with people, and enjoy mixing in all sorts of situations. Partly for this reason, I like travelling, especially in Italy. I like listening to many types of music, from Baroque to Beefheart, and hearing about its history. I also like reading about the history of mathematics, and walking on the South Downs in Sussex.
