Information about Justin

I teach History, Art History, Classical Heritage, Academic Writing and Critical Thinking (TSA) to A-level, Cambridge Pre-U, IIB, APP(USA), and undergraduate students and in the University of Oxford`s International post-graduate programmes. I also advise Oxbridge candidates on interview techniques and assess admissions essays.
In the Oxford tutorial style we explore a subject in depth by discussion, research and essays. I am very experienced at distance learning, using Zoom, Skype or Teams supported by tailored learning packs. My students achieve their potential, raise their grades and gain confidence from enhanced understanding of key points, effective material research and analysis, and the clear presentation of their ideas and findings in well-planned essays, all of which are transferable skills attractive to employers.
I studied the history of Renaissance, Baroque, Romantic and Modern Art and Architecture at the University of Oxford, completed a doctoral thesis in maritime history, was a senior academic manager for the Bodleian Library, Oxford for ten years, and am a qualified teacher. I have taught for over 20 years, and consistently achieve good results in a structured but creative and motivating way, meeting my students` expectations and helping them to raise their game.
My current students are studying Pre-U, A-level and undergraduate History of Art, and early Modern and Modern European History, and I am familiar with current examination board syllabuses in those subjects.
My relaxed but structured approach using the Oxford tutorial style of mutual discussion develops confidence and enthusiasm and enables my students to achieve their full potential. They are helped to enhance their skills in research and analysis of source material and to create effective written work which improves their results. Recent students have been helped to lift their grades by more than 10%, often the difference between an adequate pass and a competitive good pass at A-level, and between a 2.2 and a career-enhancing 2.1 or a 1st at degree level.
I am a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries and of the Royal Historical Society, and an Accredited Lecturer for the Arts Society, and formerly a Council member of leading historical societies. I am a published historian and consultant in art history and maritime history and a frequent speaker at conferences.

Availability: I am quite flexible with availability, although my teaching and Arts Society lecturing commitments are growing. I can travel up to c20 miles. During the current Covid-19 crisis - and for students outside my locality - I offer online tuition via Zoom or Skype supported by tailored learning materials, which my students find to be as effective as f-2-f tutorials, enabling me to teach students living anywhere in the world.
