Information about Alan

Hi, I`m Alan, a friendly and patient full-time Maths tutor and part-time teacher. I do a lot of online tutoring with my local council supporting vulnerable students with their studies in Maths/Science and English: KS2/3 and GCSE.

I am a reliable guy, passionate and enthusiastic about teaching high quality maths, and love breaking things down to their simplest form. I’m also patient and a good listener, with the ability to understand the way someone else thinks about a problem. I think it’s the combination of these qualities that makes me a natural tutor. Having fun while learning is an important part of effective learning.

I came late to education and have only been a teacher for 17 years. This means I have a lifetime of real experiences outside teaching: 20 years as a Royal Air Force aircraft technician using maths and physics and 10 years in the business and computing world. I spent my first 3 years as a teacher of GCSE Biology/Chemistry and Physics before converting to a maths teacher.

Since becoming a full-time maths tutor I’ve given after school help to over a hundred students with their GCSE and A level maths courses. I have also taught home schooled children, adult learners, International Baccalaureate and QTS.

Let me know what your aim is; be it to understand that topic/module you `just can’t get!`, to go through past papers, or to learn a whole course from start to finish, between us we can agree the best approach for you, and prepare a plan of action to ensure you achieve your goals.

My aim is to develop a students confidence and identify any barriers to learning. Effective learning and thinking skills can be developed through gentle questioning and guiding a student so they are able to articulate the problem and actively take part during the lesson. I feel it is important as a tutor to develop listening skills so that one can pick-up on areas where the student needs support.

I believe my experience and enthusiastic approach helps me to present difficult concepts in a simple way. Its important for me that a student engage in the lesson, have fun while learning and make good progress.

Availability: Most days evenings and weekends. I tend to only tutor in the Beverley/Hull/Brough/Hessle/Cottingham area. However, I find many parents are thoroughly enjoying my unique teaching methods online.

Willing to travel: 12 miles

Experience: 17 years secondary teaching maths/ICT/Business studies, 3 year teaching the Sciences and about 15 years tutoring both face to face and online. Including, experience of 11+ entry and ISEB pre tests.

Alan is an excellent tutor, has a lot of patience and is able to clearly explain GCSE maths concepts that my sister was struggling with. He has a very kind manner and is able to engage well, I regularly receive updates on her progress without even having to ask. She already feels a lot more confident and is really benefiting from the virtual lessons. I would definitely recommend Alan!

My daughter has been having online tutoring with Alan for a few weeks now and has already grown in confidence. Alan has an excellent style of teaching that keeps my daughter engaged with learning at the same time as enjoying it. I’d highly recommend Alan to anyone looking at tutoring

Alan started working with my son, B, a few weeks ago, B has Asperger`s and Dyspraxia so finds school and traditional learning difficult, he is coming up to his GCSE exams in the spring and Alan is working with him to support him with revision and exam style questions. B really enjoys his lessons, Alan adjusts the format and content to reflect B`s interests (outside of school) and levels of energy over the lesson. As a parent to have found a tutor who understands B`s needs but is still working towards improving grades has given us real peace of mind.

Alan has been very fliexible on session times which has helped a lot and the results have been excellent. Our grandson really enjoys the lessons and really looks forward to the next one. We can already see an improvement in his maths and also his personal confidence seems better. Highly recommended.

Alan has been working with my Year 8 daughter virtually. She has really benefited from the sessions they have had so far, and feels more confident in her maths lessons. The online sessions work well and Alan is very helpful and easy to deal with!

Alan has been tutoring our son for about a month, we have been happy with his approach, which is a good balance of motivation and challenge. Our son finds the sessions with Alan fun and they go through quite some tough material without the feeling of pressure or frustration. Alan would gently prompt/explain the material where needed leaving the actual problem solving to the student and that`s what makes it valuable learning. Our son has already improved in a number of areas where he could not do them before. We need support for 13+ entrance exams for a couple of very academically selective schools and we work very much against the clock but Alan seems to provide confidence that by the time the entrance exams come, our son will be confident with the challenging material presented in the papers.

Tutors Response :

Thank you so much Tatiana for your generous comments. Its a pleasure tutoring your son.

Fab session with Alan! My 10 year old son said after the session - `that was great`! I was a bit worried about trying to do an online tutoring session - Alan talked us through and after a few moments we were away. Lovely pace to the session, got through lots of material in a positive and encouraging fashion. I was surprised at the level of interactivity achieved. Highly recommend trying!

Tutors Response :

Thanks you very much Sallie.

I enjoyed Ollies input into the session and look forward to tutoring him again.

His drawings at the end of the session were brilliant. An artist in the making.
