Information about Camilla

Having had a thriving tutoring practice in Rochester, I have recently moved to Dover and am seeking pupils in this area. I am also tutoring online.

I teach young people aged 8 to 18, with a wide range of ability and from different educational backgrounds.

I like to establish good rapport with my pupils and to get to know their work so that I can support their studies appropriately. I chiefly use my own teaching material. All my pupils are encouraged to read widely and regularly, and regular homework is set for pupils up to year 9.

GCSE and A-Level pupils may set their own agenda, depending on their priorities and current work. Classwork includes past examination papers.

Parents regularly report greater enjoyment of the subject and improved grades: most of my work comes from personal recommendation.

CAREER
English Literature and Social Anthropology at Trintiy College, Cambridge 1985-89).
Private English tuition from 1991.
Teacher in English department at King`s School Rochester (1993-2009).
Tuition full-time from 2010.
Other teaching jobs: Kimbolton School (a boarding school in Cambridgeshire); Excel in Key Subjects (a crammer in central London).
Past GCSE English Language examiner

Do you need encouragement?
Are you falling behind?
Do you want to stay ahead?

Whether your child is educated at home, attends a state school or an independent school, I will be happy to tune into their wavelength and requirements and provide them with the friendly but stretching tuition that addresses their needs.

The lessons give us time to focus on areas that need support I aim to complement and balance school studies, so I will ask pupils what they last studied at school and what online work they are currently doing for their teachers.

Where pupils have areas of weakness, I work carefully to build their knowledge and confidence, going at their speed and reinforcing their learning as we go along.

I generally invite Key Stage 4 and 5 pupils to identify areas of greatest need, because this helps them to take an active role and engage with their preparation.

ELEVEN PLUS
I prepare Year 5 for Eleven Plus English. Planning, vocabulary extension, fuelling of the imagination, better reading and comprehension ability, versatile writing: theses are our main focuses. My wish is that pupils go into the exam feeling confident enough to tackle the task, whatever it is.

FIRST LESSON
Unlike some tutors, I do charge for the first lesson. However, no further lesson need follow unless all parties are happy to proceed.

HOMEWORK
Homework is normally set for pupils up to Year 9, and sometimes for Year 10. Parents need to be involved and ensure that homework is done.

READING
Daily reading is a basic requirement. Without it, there is limited progress.

REALISM
It`s a mistake to start tuition on the brink of the exam! Every year there are the `last-minuters` who suddenly realise that their child needs help. Generally, unless the pupil has an unusual degree of motivation, IT`S TOO LATE!

Brushing up your skills when you know you`re on course for success is one thing; trying to catch up after months of inactivity is another.

Most of my more successful pupils have had lessons over a long period of time. Skills in English are complex and take time to acquire.

THE PUPILS
I teach people from a range of educational, financial and ethnic backgrounds, and with a wide range of ability. Although I teach Dyslexic children, I am not a specialist in Dyslexia. My pupils are in main-stream education. However, the chief requirement is that they are willing to work.

Availability: Lessons are available Monday to Friday after school hours. Some weekend hours may be available. Some lessons are available during most school holidays.

One to the worst tutors do not go to and 2 weeks in a row she kept cancelling and would not reschedule bearing in mind gcse` s were only 4 weeks away. In terms of teaching it is not adapted to the new exams and it quite old styled.

Tutors Response :

Actually I did tell your son that I could not teach him on those two weekends, but he did not remember. I also contacted you to invite you to arrange a lesson in the second week of the school holidays, and you did not respond.

As for my style of teaching, your judgement is purely subjective and is based on very little experience of my methods.
