Information about Nigel

Qualified to B.Sc, Ph.D level I have been successfully tutoring Maths and Physics to GCSE and A-level for 8 years.I find both Maths and Physics totally fascinating subjects, and try to instil some of my enthusiasm for them into my students.

I am married to a teacher, who is qualified to B.A and PGSE and also works as a private tutor. We work very much as a team, with her tutoring the younger students, while I concentrate on the older ones.

Availability: Weekdays late mornings, afternoons and evenings.

Although I prefer to find weekday slots, I am prepared to work on Saturday late mornings or afternoons if a weekday slot cannot be found.

Please note that I only work from my home, where I have all my teaching resources readily to hand.

Willing to travel: Home Only

Experience: After getting my Ph.D I worked as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow, where I had a number of lecturing duties.

After my time as a Research Fellow, I joined the scientific branch of the Civil Service, where I worked on a number of projects in the field of electronics and communications.

As a general guide I expect to improve a student`s performance by at least one grade. Sometimes I can achieve an improvement of two or more grades, but, of course, that depends on the student putting in the necessary work.

While I clearly cannot name references the following are extracts from some emails sent to me.

"Thought you would like to know Cam got an A* for Maths and an A in Further Maths..... Thanks again for your tuition which he really enjoyed and found very helpful." 13/08/2013.

"I am writing to thank you for your tutoring which assisted me in achieving an A in Edexcel A2 mathematics.Overall I gained 510 out of 600 ums aith A grades in C1,C2,C4,s1 and D1 plua a C in C3. Thanks again. Josh" 15/08/2014.

"I just wanted to let you know that I managed to obtain an A in my GCSE maths. This would not have been possible without your tutoring for many years. Thank you! From Phoebe" 29/08/2013

Thank you Nigel for all your support and effort, for being flexible and adaptable on numerous occasions and most importantly for increasing Adam`s confidence in Physics at A level.
Much appreciated and highly recommended.

He was good, but didn`t cover what my son needed for new A/L maths.

Tutors Response :

I am BAFFLED by this feedback! It was based on the first, free, “get to know you” session. Apparently he told his mother that I did not cover the “new” A level maths syllabus.

In fact, I explained to him that the differences between the old and new syllabus were ONLY CHANGES TO EXAM FORMAT (scrapping AS exams and replacing the modules with 2 pure maths papers and a combined statistics and mechanics paper) and some slight changes in emphasis, BUT THE UNDERLYING MATHS REMAINS UNCHANGED.

For example there is more emphasis on differentiation from first principles and less on integration by the methods of parts or substitution (calculus) and the Newton-Raphson method for finding approximate roots of equations has moved from further maths to core maths.

My son was doing fairly well in physics but needed a good grade to qualify for the course he wanted. Nigel tutored him once a week for around six months leading up to the exams. My son normally needs to be pushed to do things but after a couple of weeks he was getting ready himself and waiting for me to take him to the tutorial. He was definitely enjoying the lessons and was doing more self-study. The tutorials gave him confidence in the subject. He achieved an A* and will be doing the course he wanted at University next academic year.

Thanks to Nigel, my son achieved a A grade in his GCSE. Nigel helped boost his confidence and showed him a wide range of methods to answer any given question . Highly recommend .
