Fully qualified teacher with 10 years experience in schools and tutoring.
Is maths a mystery? Do you wish you understood ‘why’ as well as ‘how’? If you ask a question, does your teacher give the same explanation again and again? It doesn’t have to be that way. My methods really work; my students increase their mathematical abilities and confidence, and can explain what they’re doing. Some are so excited after my lessons that they can`t wait to tell their parents all about it! Do you wish your child was so inspired by their teacher that they voluntarily did extra maths in order to improve?
If your child has had a difficult time with maths at school, or perhaps you`ve tried other tutors and been disappointed, fear not, there is a better way. Follow other parents who have noticed their child leave my lessons with a grin, and a bounce in their step, follow other students who have messaged me after exams to tell me that there was so much they could do! This way works; maths doesn`t have to be a mystery.
About me
I am a fully qualified teacher, with ten years experience teaching all levels 11-18, including the new GCSE and A-level. In the first lesson, I`ll ask lots of questions to get a picture of what my new student can and can`t yet do, and more importantly, what they understand. I`ll then use that to build a programme for the next few weeks, including any topics that they would like to work on. Often I point out weaknesses that my students haven`t noticed or haven`t realised are holding them back; once we fix these, progress is visible and can be quick.
My planning is completely flexible and is built around my student’s progress and needs, and I use a variety of resources so that we can explore topics in different ways. I am patient and used to explaining concepts in several different ways to find the way that works for each individual. I don’t teach tricks (unless you want me to), I focus on helping students to understand.
What online lessons require and involve
Having online lessons is often something students haven’t considered or perhaps feel daunted by. I’ve taught a number of students online, some exclusively so and some when convenient e.g. when they or I went on holiday. Online lessons also allow me to be more flexible over timings and to offer a lower rate since no travel is involved.
Has your child ever been so excited by their maths lessons that they asked to have one while away on holiday? My students have!
Online lessons require a computer, not necessarily a laptop, internet access and a quiet room.
I carry out lessons on Bitpaper, an online free whiteboard. I send a link to a new whiteboard by email before each lesson and if students sign up for an account, they can save that whiteboard and come back to it whenever they want. Thus they have ready-made notes after each lesson.
My students and I can call each other through Bitpaper and opt to have cameras on or not; I am always happy to follow my students’ lead on this. I know some people prefer to work unseen whereas others like being able to look at my face as we discuss topics. What matters is that my students are comfortable. I can also make an audio recording of the lesson for the student to listen to as many times as they like.
I set homework on another website, also free to use, that marks work for me and the student and allows me to focus on giving feedback and correcting misconceptions.

I started off looking for a tutor at the start of year 11. My results from the previous year without a maths tutor were anywhere from 4 to 6 and 6 being my best work. i decided to try a maths tutor to help me, i tried three different tutors before julia and none of them taught the way i was looking for, with the correct level of detail, supporting me and making me for once begin to enjoy the subject and want to learn more. they also didnt help my grade`s improve after working with them for a number of months. But the way julia taught, it was the exact way i wanted. she knew when the go back down to basics on specific topics and when to push me, which helped me increase of knowledge of the subject and be comfortable with any sum or problem faced on a maths paper. Julia taught me every possible detail i would need to know for gcse maths and also pushed me with some more advanced questions. julia made me enjoy the subject, improve my grades and inspire me to debate doing maths A level. after working with julia for a number of months, my gardes were begging to turn into 9s and 8s. as i am now expecting a 9 in my gcse results. this all wouldnt be possible without julia and i owe her a big thank you and i couldnt recormend her more as a maths tutor because she really has inspired me.

Julia has been a massive help to my son with his A level maths. He finds her lessons interesting and easy to follow. She has motivated him to understand Maths better and work harder to apply that knowledge. As a result his grades have improved and he is much happier. Thankyou!

Julia has been a fantastic tutor. She has listened to what I need and planned all the sessions to best prepare me for upcoming tests. I have gone from someone who doesn`t enjoy maths and has little confidence to someone who enjoys it and believes in there own ability. This is definitely down to Julia`s tuition.

Julia helped our 16 year old son (lower 6th) with his A Level maths during lockdown. I have no difficulty in recommending Julia to other parents - she is professional, conscientious and gave us some very thoughtful and considered advice. Definitely a good option for students struggling with confidence in getting to grips with the jump from GCSE up to A Level maths.

Julia tutored our daughter for A level maths and further maths. Can`t praise or thank her enough. Julia was really flexible and very quickly identied areas where she could help. Julia was and excellent tutor for my daughter who was struggling A ‘Level Math`s, without Julia support and help I do not think my daughter would of achieved the grade and subsequently the university of choice without Julia`s help, I would fully recommend Julia to anyone who wishes to improve their Math`s grades.

My two children have now been with Julia for some months and we highly recommend her. She is sensitive to their differences and individual needs. She works with their strengths to engage them in dealing with the more difficult aspect of maths for them. She takes a holisic view of their performance and attainment - looking at how to inspire their interest in the subject as well as sleep and good study habits. And she has been flexible and accommodating with session times.

Julia has helped my son tremendously to help pass his A Level maths exams. Julia is an excellent listener and always goes the extra mile to make sure you understand a concept or topic. Julia gives multiple methods to tackle harder questions which gives you the chance to find one that works for you. She has excellent resources to help aid learning including use of up to date text books. Julia is excellent at breaking down complex topics and teaching it in a way that is manageable. Julia is also good at spotting and correcting weaknesses in maths skills which goes a long way in exams. Overall really happy! Thank you Julia!

Julia is absolutely inspirational. Although she is tutoring both of my children, I actually went into the study after she`d finished last week and starting to work out the challenge she`d set!!! Two hours I was in there without even realising. Julia is a strong person and uses that strength to positively engage with my children in a way that gets the most from them. They are able to explore topics that their school teacher can`t spend time on, neither of my children`s maths Teachers are particularly good, one actually tells my daughter that she `hasn`t got what it takes to do well`, which is a terrible thing to say. However, Julia is our saviour and she engages my daughter and believes she should be studying for the Higher exam. This is building up her confidence as well as her knowledge. Personally I got on with Julia from the outset and she`s just fantastic.

Despite my son`s initial reluctance, Julia has managed to establish a good working relationship and has made a significant improvement in his understanding of several key maths topics. I only wish I had started lessons sooner to give more time to prepare for GCSE exams.
