Information about Melissa

ACCEPTING NEW STUDENTS FROM SEPTEMBER 2020

Hi, I`m Melissa.

I am a qualified secondary English teacher with three years teaching experience. I have been tutoring since 2012 and I have an excellent record of helping students progress from predicted grades of C/B to achieving A/A* at GCSE.

After successfully completing a degree in English Literature at The University of Manchester I briefly worked as a resident tutor at one of the UK`s top boarding schools before beginning my teacher training.

I am a patient and friendly person with a real passion for English. I have a keen eye for detail and have created a wide range of resources to help prepare students for the new GCSE specification (GP9-1). After identifying a student`s strengths and weaknesses I am able to create personalised resources to suit the individual`s needs.

I am keen to use my knowledge, passion and experience to help prepare students for examinations in English literature and English language. My particular strengths are analytical writing (essays) and creating appropriate revision resources.

During the first lesson I will complete an assessment of the student`s core reading and writing ability and their understanding of key terminology. After identifying the student`s strengths and weaknesses I am then able to create personalised resources to suit the individual`s needs.

I focus on developing the skills students will need to pass the exams and break each examination down into logical steps. I also encourage students to attempt tasks independently in preparation for the following session so that I can track true progress over time.

I encourage students who are currently in year 9 to begin preparing for their GCSE examinations so that they can develop the core skills and work through the material in enough depth to achieve the top marks. I also welcome students in year 10 and year 11 who would like to boost their confidence and their grades.

Willing to travel: 5 miles

Experience: I have extensive experience working with young people in a variety of settings including volunteering as a Brownie leader for two years, five weeks spent working in summer schools in Mexico and ten weeks working at a summer camp in Pennsylvania, USA.

In addition I worked as a resident tutor in an all girls boarding school where I supported students with their homework and supervised clubs and leisure activities.

During my time as a secondary English teacher I have developed a wide range of resources including schemes of work for key GCSE topics which have included poetry (on the theme of love and relationships), non-fiction and The Sign of Four.

The exam boards I am most familiar with are AQA and Eduqas (WJEC), and I have an excellent knowledge of the following GCSE set texts:
The Sign of Four
A Christmas Carol
The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde
Romeo and Juliet
Macbeth
The Merchant of Venice
Othello
Lord of the Flies
Animal Farm
An Inspector Calls
Blood Brothers
The History Boys
DNA

I am also familiar with both AQA poetry clusters.

In addition I have recently developed a range of resources to prepare students for the English language exams, covering 19th century non-fiction and 20th-21st century fiction and non-fiction, focusing in particular on exam technique.

I am also confident in helping students to develop their writing skills and my attention to detail when marking helps students to quickly identify errors and make lasting improvements to their writing.

Melissa tutored my son recently for GCSE English language and English Literature. He was really struggling and we didn`t expect him to pass either. However with Melissa`s help and support he managed to pass both with great results. We would never have got through without her.She was extremely professional , very well organised and well prepared. She prepared an individual teaching programme based on his needs , but the lessons were also enjoyable.Would reccomend her without hesitation.
Thanks again Melissa.

Melissa tutored my daughter for approximately 5 months in advance of the new English GSCE this summer. My daughter subsequently achieved excellent grades in both Literature and Language.
Melissa is professional, extremely organised and patient. She commenced with a detailed assessment, which formed the basis of tailor-made lessons. My daughter felt comfortable with Melissa and gained confidence in her studies. I would highly recommend Melissa.
